Can anyone recommend a detailed urban survival manual that offers suggestions, advice and techniques?

I am looking for a book similar to the US Army's Survival Manual. However, the Army's survival guide does not have a section on urban survival. I live in a major city and want to get information on where to get water, food and shelter in the event I run out of supplies in a war, financial collapse, governmental take-over or natural disaster. I like the book "Steal This Book," but the information in it is very outdated from the 1970s. Anyone know of some comparable books? Thanks.

A better idea would be for you to take some classes in first aid and volunteer to participate in disaster relief drills. If you look around you can find many opportunities to prepare yourself to make a difference after a disaster.

US Army Survival Guide?

Has anyone bought this (http://www.amazon.co.uk/US-Army-Survival -Manual-Illustrated/dp/9562914488/ref=sr _1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1210018 493&sr=1-1) guide? Is it good? I downloaded a 1992 version but it's 646 pages long, that one is only 288, does it have all the information?

Thanks for your help.

Go to the library and get it there.

Army Wives: what would you put in a "manual" for yourself?

If there was a "manual" you would have received when you first got married, what would you have wanted in it? Things like etiquette, acronyms, and deployment survival? Thanks ladies!

during deployments ..... dont stress him out with problems at home. try to resolve the problem with help from friends and family.

FRG (Family Readiness Group) is always there to help you out

AER (Army Emergency Relief) can help you with financial problems ie. car brakes down and you dont have money to fix it, house on fire and you dont have anywhere to go ect.

STAY FAITHFUL NO MATTER HOW LONELY YOU ARE!

What wilderness survival techniques do you know?

I have read the U.S. army field manual and read all kinds of things on many websites, but I want more ways to survive. What are some good ways to get food, water, shelter, or anything else that might be helpful. I live in florida, so if you know some techniques that would be specifically useful for florida survival, that would be awesome, but any techniques will be do.

Why are you learning? If you are learning for End-of-Days, most of the techniques discussed here are valid. If you are learning to survive until rescued, or until you hike out after being lost on a day hike, things are a little different.
First of all, don't get lost. Always carry a compass and know how to use it.
If separated from your team, S.T.O.P.- Stop, Think, Observe, Plan. Sit down and consider your situation. Remember the rule of threes - you survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without warmth (in bad weather), 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food. What do you need NOW? If you think you know how to get back, leave a trail. Otherwise stay put. If you are cold, get warm. If you are wet, get dry. Then make provisions to stay in that state. Once your position is stable, then make plans. If you are separated, the first task is to make yourself as visible as possible. Spread cloth on the ground, knock down plants in a recognizable pattern, get in an open area. Prepare three campfires, well separated, with provision to light them if someone comes close.
Now that you have increased your chances of being spotted, look after your future. Build a solar still, fish, whatever you need. Unless you are familiar with plants, do not risk them until necessary. Again, you will survive three weeks without food. If you get sick eating something you should not have, you cut way down on your chances.
Most people die from doing something foolish or not thinking things through. It sounds like you have the knowlege. Just remember to use it.

Upward cut makes less noise?

I am reading the US Army Survival Manual this summer.
The book says, when moving through dense vegetation an upward cut with a machette makes less noise than a downward cut. Why is that?

in thick brush the vegitation usally droops downward. in a downward cut the plant make more likly just be pushed away than actually cut, and by which make alot of noise. but an upward cut against the grain "if you will" of the drooping plant will be a more effective cut and cause the severed particals fall to the forest floor with less disruption of other materials.

William Grassie has a fuzzy-headed far view on surviving catastrophe :

Imagine a major planetary catastrophe, … something in the order of the Mt. Toba supervolcano … some 73,000 years ago. … Humanity was reduced to some 1000-to-10,000 breeding pairs. … One of the thirty or so supervolcanos … is the Yellowstone Basin. … The United States disappears in the course of a few days. … The survivors would be reduced to subsistence farming, gathering, hunting, and fishing in areas around the earth’s equator. … Let’s say that humanity is again reduced to some 10,000 breeding pairs. …

What knowledge from today would be most valuable to these survivors as they tried to rebuild their lives and repopulate the earth? … You get to choose one book. …  Stockpiling food and weapons in the mountains of Idaho would be a silly and small-minded emergency plan. … Instead of focusing on the survival of my tribe, my family, or myself, we need to focus on the survival of civilization. ….  And the only way to do this with assurance is to distribute the most valuable and practical knowledge as widely as possible across the planet today in anticipation that unfortunate day. …
