Ray Mears shows us how to make a strong shelter in wet forest, and the right and wrong ways to strike a match.
I was watching some film, Armaggedon or something similar, destruction of life was imminent and people were selected to go live in a purpose-built shelter. But how long would this be sustainable for, given food problems, population growth etc etc? Would it be a feasable way for the human race to survive a nuclear winter or other similar catastrophe? I ask merely out of curiosity!
I suppose you could recycle the water to make it last but food would be the problem, otherwise I would think about one generation before they started killing each other.
My friends and I are looking to go spend a weekend survival camping (building shelter, catching food, etc.) and I'd like to know about any similar adventures. Anything you would recommend bringing would also be nice. Any tips and tricks to keep the weekend as fun and successful as possible would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Part of the question deals with our lack of food and shelter. What supplies would help with that specifically?
Mosquito spray & face net if they're bad where you're going.
Sunscreen.
Baby powder to clean your hair with instead of shampoo.
Toilet Paper
Beef Jerky
Drinking Water
Small hammock (rolls up into a fist-sized ball)
Telescopic fishing pole w/gear
First aid kit
Don't leave food out. Bears like to come into camps
when you have food out. Keep in sealed coolers away
from your tent. Raccoons also like to steal shiney metal
objects like car keys (I learned this from experience).
Bury all waste.
Leave no litter. What you pack in, pack out.
Try doing without a campfire. There is a drought in numerous states now. If not, then be EXTREMELY CAREFUL and
be very close to a stream or lake where you could quickly
douse the fire.
Hackey sack
Slingshot with b-bs
Dartboard with darts
Fruit roll-ups
Pickled eggs
Extra socks (prevents blisters)
Wear good hiking boots
Good knife
Make sushi from the fish you catch heh heh
Build a sweat lodge from sticks & tarp.
Make it a vision quest
Meditate together by moonlight
Flashlights w/batteries
Handbook on local edible wild vegetation
(don't pick mushrooms though, it's too chancy
to mistake edibles for poisonous).
Hat
Sunglasses
Bandanna
Lightweight inflatable tube to float on
portable radio
marshmallows & weiners (in case you can't catch any fish)
playing cards
camera
ziplock bags to protect things from rain
rain-proof lightweight parka
sleeping bag
tent if desired
aluminum foil
lensatic compass
signal mirror
a p-38 (military can opener)
dental floss
toothpaste & brush
deodorant
dish detergent (use as soap)
binoculars
If you're going in the mountains, be aware that snowfalls
do occur in the month of July out west. Mosquitos can
be horrid at high elevations.
Bring your sense of humor,
some scary ghost stories,
a little tape recorder to record them,
instant coffee,
a comb or brush,
duct tape
a whistle
a topographic map
a book on orienteering
have fun!
I don't want zombie survival games or anything like that. No shooting games. Something where you are stranded somewhere and have to get food and build shelter.
i dont know any games like thta but you should definetly try:
ogame.org- really awesome planet survival game
tribalwars.net- build your own tribe and he;p it survive
travian.com- almost same thing as tribal wars
il love these games, try them
Ive been looking for some survival sort of games for some time now, im talking about things along the lines of the stranded series, your in the wilderness, you must hunt for food, build shelter, build up a base, cook, craft, etc etc
The Sims 2: Castaways come to mind. I though it was great.
Everyone#39;s Best Important Survival Gear | publishedrage.com
The types of emergencies that people should prepare for can include things like having no electricity for days because of a power outage. It can mean being prepared if there is a flood or a hurricane. Emergencies might also involve tornadoes, forest fires and sudden blizzards on a highway. But the fact remains that emergencies might also involve a house fire, a tire going flat while four-by-four driving in the mountains, or becoming lost on a camping trip. There are fifteen pieces of survival gear that will help a person in almost any emergency situation.
The first thing to keep available in case of an emergency is a map. It should be a topographical map with features. Not only should there be a map but there should also be someone who knows how to read it. Having a compass or GPS receiver would also help if possible. A flashlight is the second piece of emergency equipment. It’s dangerous to wander around in the dark. Along with both of these, an emergency pack should have extra dehydrated food, for energy purposes. It may not seem like survival gear per se but without energy, people often find they have no strength to help themselves.
