What I'm talking about is someone who lives in the bush for an extended period of time and either lives in a cabin or some other housing. I hear of people of all sorts venturing into this sort of life. What kind of survival skills would be required? Do you know of any good books on the subject?
I'm not actually thinking of doing it, but would just like to know what it's like.
Having lived in Fairbanks Alaska for almost 20 years I can tell you that living in the "bush" of Alaska requires deep personal strength, the ability to think on your feet and no overwhelming sense of pride. In Alaska you ask for help when you need it and you give it when Asked for it.
If you really want to know what it takes to live in the bush (and survive) the best thing to do is ask someone who didn't make it. Learn from their mistakes.
There is a movie (based off of a book of diary entries) called into the wild- It is a story of a Man who went into the wilds of alaska and died 2 miles from a road to civilization. He died because he ate a plant that restricted his ability to take in nutrients... He Starved to death with a full stomach. Learning from him you would be best to learn about the native vegitation. There was a guy out in Katmai that died because he got to comfortable with Grizzlies. Learn from his mistakes and learn how to deal with wild life. Btw Moose kill more people in alaska every year than bears. Plan for bad weather be happy when its not. Learn how to make shelter out of boughs from pine trees (if you can call the black spruce a pine... More like a really shaggy pencil) Now if you want to really learn how to Survive in Alaska you really ought to try it.
Summers are best for beginners. Leave an Itinerary with BLM (the burough of land managment) and the State Troopers, Include maps, sat phone number, time line and list of supplies and locaton of potential drop sites if you need more food. Also plan for extraction by bush plane or boat if needed. Living in the bush of Alaska is easy if you keep your head. I lived for 3 months on the banks of a river 30 miles north of Anchorage in 1995. Tent sleeping bag and clothes. I traveled 15 miles every day by thumb to find a job and food. Just use your head.
I find out what sort of things are needed for a survival kit when in the bush. What do you take? Tell me here: www.operationhq.co.nz
Do you have any survival skills for that type of situation?
I'd tell the b!tch to get a Bic and start shavin'.
Mears- thats Ray Mears the survival expert in case you're confused.
I mean he has such great skill in the bush, and he's so good with his hand's. Not to mention his strapping good looks and boyish charm!
Who's with me?

Survival Skills: Survival Machete Use Tips
The six day trip would have been incomplete without some tutorial video on the machete. I have my own opinions and way of doing things. In the words of Bruce Lee, "Absorb what is useful." The machete can be applied in so many different environments that what works for me may not work for you. Here in Central Brazil I mainly use a 16 inch Latin pattern Tramontina modified to my way of working. This blade may or may not work for you but I am happy with it. One thing is universal, if your hand is getting ripped up by the machete you need to change the way you are working. You can't afford to reduce your hand to blisters and raw meat in this environment. The basic grip when chopping is the...
