I was wondering what to include in a survival kit to keep in my car. I know a first aid kit is a definate, space blanket, and food. But what else should I include? I've seen ones on eBay that are complete and cover the basics to up to a week, but I don't want to pay $80 + for a emergency kit for my car if I can make one myself cheaper.
So what should I include? Please make a complete list, and if you know the average price please include that as well. And if you know of a website that has information on what to have in one then post it as well. Thanks.
Three most important things:
1. Communication: A way of signalling distress (the old mobile phone sounds like a good idea, I might have to implement that). Also, some way of warning passing drivers may well be a good idea.
2. Survival: Depends where, when you are. Blankets/coats, food/water. Fire extinguisher should be included anyway, and like you say, first aid kit.
3. Maintenance: Basic knowledge and equipment for common faults in cars (wheel changes, mud/snow situations etc.).
That lot should hopefully keep you covered.

14 hour trips 10 times a year (bored out of my mind)
anything fun wouild be appreciated (but it must be able to be done in the confinment of a car)
For just yourself? Are children involved? Are you the driver?
I'm a big fan of books on tape. If you're driving alone then audio is really the only thing you can do safely. Making a mix of your favorite music (easy with an iPod or mp3) is a good option.
If you're a passenger- do you get carsick? I know people who read during long car trips (I can't). If you're not the only passenger, you can play games like car bingo (you can buy premade boards or make your own) for things you see commonly out the car window and have some sort of prize for the winner. Don't play this with the driver as it's too distracting, though.
My husband and I drove cross-country and we'd play word games. One was "Johnny likes..." one person decides on a particular thing Johnny likes and gives clues about it by saying Johnny likes ____ but not ______. Then the other person tries to guess and can ask yes/no questions about what he likes to get more clues. For example:
Start- Johnny likes apples but not pears, bananas but not grapes, he *really* likes Mississippi, but not Iowa.
Does he like coffee? Yes.
Does he like tea? No.
In this case Johnny liked words with double letters. You can make it about anything: things that are a certain color or from a certain place, etc. We spent hours playing this game. Mostly because I was terrible at it and it took me forever to figure it out.
There are also one-sentence riddles that the other person uses yes/no questions to figure out the story behind the one senetnce answer. One that we did was, "A man walks into a resturant, orders albatross, takes one bite then walks outside and shoots himself. Why?"
Of course, one of you needs to know the story beforehand, but you can google search a lot of those. The other person works backwards to figure out what happened (ask about his job, if there were other people there, etc).
I live in MN, and it gets COLD! What are some things I should pick up that you wouldn't normally think of for my winter-survival kit to keep in my car..."just in case"...thank you!
You never know what you might need in case of an emergency. Make sure you keep the following items in your vehicle.
Fully charged cell phone
Pen or pencil and a pad of paper
Vehicle operating manual
Emergency service information
Signal flares
Instant plug for flat tires
Flashlight with extra batteries
Bottled drinking water
Preserved snacks
Blanket
Paper towels
Jumper cables
Warning triangles or reflectors
Engine coolant
Windshield wiper fluid
Tire pressure gauge
Ice scraper
Vehicle jack with flat board for soft surfaces
Tool kit including duct tape and heavy gloves
Umbrella
So, I'm in a health class and I have to put together a first aid kit for my car. Besides the basics, bandages, pain relevers, antibiotic ointments, what else would you put in a first aid (NOT survival) kit for your Car?
Besides the basics? -- Nothing. You're in a health class. You shouldn't have anything you aren't trained to use.
You should definitely have all or most of the basics though. That would include --
Clean water
Blanket
Triangle bandage
Cold pack
Bandaid
Flat gauze
Rolled Gauze
Tongue depressor
Cardboard (for splinting)
Tape!
Scissors (bandage scissors preferably)
Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide (some people are allergic to betadine)
CPR Mask
Small trash bag
That should be good -- and cover most of the basics you'd need for minor stuff.
If you add 2 blankets, twist ties, and a bigger gauze pad -- you could deliver a baby.
Also -- (not first aid)
Something reflective
A Jacket
Flares
