Where can I find information on catching and cooking animals in wilderness for emergency survival needs?

I want to learn about what I can catch and cook and eat to replenish my energy if I'm stuck in the woods or desert or open plains with little or no equipment. How to find them, and how to know if they're edible, and how to eat them.

I can't seem to find anything on google, so I need some help thanks.

you should read the book SAS survival guide
it was written by an SAS soldier
it is a great book and was only about 10 bucks at my local chapters
it has information on how to survive everywhere in the world

Basic Desert Survival Kit

www.arizonabushman.com This is an example of a simple desert survival kit.

you are on a desert island for 1 month. what items do you choose to take?

you are allowed:
a companion, non-human
only 1 type of food- this is what you will live on for a whole month
1 piece of electronic (battery operated) equipment for entertainment
1 item of personal/sentimental value.
1 piece of survival equipment, eg: matches to light a fire
name the 5 items you would take from the above catagories!

1. A cat (to control rat population) They also require very little care
2. Peanut butter
3. radio
4. medication for survival (I would not be able to live beyond three days without my medication).
5. matches or flint

What is your survival skill?

Have you ever jumped off a mountain? Fallen from a burning plane? Shoot an arrow at a killer bear? Whatever you did you had some way of saving yourself or someone else. I have a list of possible scenarios to which you will have to answer to get ten points. Answer them right at one time.

1. A fire breaks out in the movie theater. Someone tries to keep everyone calm when all of a sudden the people start to run in a rampage out the door. You realize that you are very short and are sure to be pushed down. How should you save yourself from being trampled?

2. You are lost on a deserted rode in Texas when you hear a deadly sound. Before you can move you feel the rattler's fangs reach into your leg. You slowly begin to panic. How do you save yourself from being poisoned and get yourself to the next town?

3. Some friends ask you to go camping with them to have some fun and you agree to come. You're the normal funny man anyway. As the night slows down and people go to there tents you hear the howl of wolves. You never used a gun before and you never were afraid until now that you might have to use one. Suddenly out of the corner of your eye you see a pair of golden eyes. A low growl eminates from deep within the wolfs throat. You jump to your feet. What do you do to save yourself and friends from a lone wolf?

4. One night you come home and realize someone has broken into your house. You have either had this happen or not either way you hear foot steps above your head. You know that if you are too loud the person will hear you and you would rather stay "gone". Then you hear the footsteps coming down the stairs. All you have ever had as a weapon was sport equipment. What do you do now?

5. A loose wild hog just ran into the middle of the road and is looking very miffed at your car being in its territory. The animal is the size of an over grown horse and his tusks are sharpened to the finest points. You have heard of a man getting pulverized in a nearby county by this exact hog. You know this because the other hog was never found and killed. You like your car but you love your life more. The hog doesn't seem to be backing down but rather getting ready to destroy your car like a tank. How do you survive?

6. You are at a pool party when you hear a blonde come running onto the scene. You recognize her as your best friends lover. The blonde grabs a radio and starts to jam. You don'trealize the danger until the question, "Can you hear this underwater?" is heard. Everyone screams because you are the only one left in the pool. What do you do?

Please answer hos you would really get out with your life. There is also one more thing. You have no means of communication anywhere. Just have fun with it. Forget about answering them for points. Just answer them for fun. Someone will still get points. If you want to have a contest I have another question.

Just for fun!
Nice song. I have to say though that it doesn't answer anything. Have good day Mr. Troll.
I don't have that much time. I'm just bored right now. I actually finished all my chores. Well I actually just like reading about people who are kinda writing to me. I live a very sheltered life.

1) Push myself up on top of people's backs and ride my way out. I'll change from person to person if I have to.

2) Speak Rattlesnake and ask the animal to hold off for a few minutes until I can get into a place with cell reception.

3) Growl back and hope it runs away scared.

4) Grab the barbell and hit the guy in the head. I have great aim!!! lol

5) Floor it. Right in his direction - sideswipe him. I'm not going down without a fight.

6) Wave back and answer the question.

GREAT song BTW!!!!! lol

If you were trapped on a deserted island...?

...what 3 things (not people) would you want to have with you?

(other than survival equipment...so you don't need to put 'matches' or 'pocket knife' down)

Does that even exist?? I thought that the world had no empty space that there wasn't someone...
Connection to the closest civilization,
Deed to the Island,
Product to capitalize of the Island

Survival Equipment- that ties up a lot
Lets get lost with
1. Computer-With the outdoor speakers
thats it Survival equipment and music, Probably a keyboard so I can make some more mixes if I'm there a while, Thats 2

Duh Some form of generator for the electronic Equipment
let get lose with these-
Hows this being STRANDED??? Sounds like the best vacation...

Why do some people think they are born with wilderness survival skills?

My last Q about this was horribly written.
What I am asking is why do some folks think that they are born to survive in a wilderness?
Even Native Americans aren’t born with the skills of their ancestors. Yet I have met quite a few people of all races who think they just know it all, about how nature works and how to survive in it.
This has scared me for them many times, like a young man who wants to “live off the land” in a remote area, who will not listen to experienced advice, nor seek such advice.

How do you get it across to them that having a gun and knife doesn’t make you an instant wilderness survivalist?
Here is an example of what I am asking about;
http://abcnews.go.com/Nightline/Story?id =3680748&page=1
People are getting killed in remote places, from the deserts of the south west, the woods and swamps in the Deep South, through the Rockies and the rest of North America, from inexperience, lack of outdoor skills and lack of proper equipment.
How can we get across to such people to save their lives?
Our Government spends millions warning us about everything from cigarettes to cosmetics, but not that the outdoors can kill you. Don’t you think this should be taught in every classroom in America?
Do you have any idea how to save some of these lives?
Another example; http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&am p;cpsidt=1600388
METRO.. you have an excellent point. However I live where these kinds of people visit; remote Alaska, and every year we have people die here. I used to help search and rescue some years ago look for such people. And I have helped recover what was left of them IF we found them. I found a family of 5 and a big dog, in a small inflatable raft 8 miles from shore, with no life jackets. It took me a ½ hour to convince the moron dad that their lives were in peril. He had no clue, but the Coast Guard gave him a few after I called them! Stupid people or not that was lives saved.
shimmitail1 to answer your Q’s in your answer; yes I can. The wife and I have homesteaded while we raised many kids. Today we grow our own food, catch our own fish, hunt for our meat and are 80% self sufficient. I have about a half century of farming, hunting, fishing and food preservation experience. At the moment I am training a 26 year old man and his wife wilderness survival skills, here in Alaska.
Folks I appreciate your answers. But despite the morons out there, I believe many are just uninformed. In the city there are signs that warn you; “watch your step”, “wait for light”, “sharp turn ahead” etc, there are none in nature. So unless people are taught; they just don’t know. Therefore I think we as hunters should make an effort to teach. Donate some time to speak at schools and teach kids the basics. Lets share our knowledge, maybe it will save a life.

Some people are just idiots, straight up. I am Native American and I lived in Alaska for about 7 years, but there's no way in hell I would go and try to survive out in the wilderness unless I knew EXACTLY what I was doing. Many people just do stuff like this to prove something to themselves or others. That Alexander Supertramp (Chris) guy was just a dumb rich kid who should have thought things through. My sister lives in Fairbanks and she thinks he's a huge dumbass for what he did. To the locals out there, he is a joke. You can't stop people from being stupid, but you CAN inform them and try to help them see the light.

  • The Desert and Desert Survival 4

Desert shelters are of three main types: 1) Natural shelters are caves and rock overhangs. When using natural shelters, remember there may already be other inhabitants that need eviction. Rattlesnakes, tortoises, ground squirrels, lizards, andskunks often use caves and other cool areas during the heat of the day. They may be sources of food, but are also potentially dangerous to humans. Some reptiles are venomous and many mammals carry rabies or plague. They can usually be removed with a stick or dispatched with a rock. 2) Man-made shelters include tents, vehicles, and buildings. Most vehicles become very hot and may hasten heat illness and dehydration. It is better to sit in the shade of an...
