What would you recommend for a rugged street legal dirt bike that can handle desert heat?

I have a 4x4, but I want to get into some ridiculously remote areas with a dirt bike that can be comfortable on the street. It must be 4-stroke and be good on gas. I want it to be light, so nothing over 650cc and be able to handle a 2-up load and some survival gear as well.
Any suggestions?

good old XR650 very dependable great all around bike with lots of aftrer market goodies available and priced well.

The KTM 525/530 also a great bike.

The DRZ 400 Suzuki works well if you want a little more nimble bike they also have a 250

Basic Desert Survival Kit

Is it easier to survive in extreme cold or extreme heat?

Say the desert vs the arctic- in the desert I'm talking about just sand, lizards, maybe a few low-lying scrub bushes, indicating potential small reserves of water far beneath the sand. In the arctic environment I mean just snow, maybe fish under a layer of ice.

In both instances we will say you are equipped with the appropriate clothes and have the necessary tools for creating fire, a knife, a shovel, basic survival gear, but no food or water.

You only have to survive a few days, not long-term.

Which is the "easier" environment to shelter yourself from the elements, get enough water, food and just generally survive in for the short-term?

Personally I hate being cold. But if placed in a survival situation for say, 3-4 days, I'd take the cold. You can dehydrate in half a day in extreme heat. Plus you'd be threatened by heat stroke. Cold would be uncomfortable but much more survivable especially under your proposed scenario of having clothes and fire making ability.

MOLLE 3 Day Military Assault Pack Backpack - Desert Tan

here is a goo riddle (that's right, it is very goo!!)?

out of three men, who would stand the greatest chance at survival if stranded on a deserted island?? the first being a nature guide with a backpack full of survival gear, the second is a man of the wild, he was born and raised in nature and has never recieved anything man-made, as far as he knows, he is the only man alive, that is how deep in nature he is, or the last but most certainly not least, with only a can of hairspray and a gleamingly attractive chest and ripped up pirate's shirt on, and some pirate boots, and a bandana on, we have patrick swayze, who would you place your money on?? i am going with the swayzemaster!! all the way, how could he not survive, he would surely outlast all these other jokesters, like for sure!!

I'm going with...Swayzemaster too,how could i not?! He's fit and looks so good, he has to survive!

Where would you rather be stranded?

In an arctic tundra with snow gear and rations, or in the sahara desert, with water and basic tools?

Basically, which remote chance of survival would you choose? Ice or fire?

Tell me why you chose the one you did.

desert.....at least it would cool at night but in the artic it would always be freezing!

What are your opinions on global warming?

Global warming's going to submerge the planet? I don't think so. Not that I don't believe in Global Warming. I do. Ocean levels are rising, you can see it. But submergence doesn't happen overnight. A natural cycle, of deserts and melting pole caps, is followed by another cyclic Age of Ice. Maybe we are destroying the planet: we'll get what we deserve. But either way, catastrophe thins our herd. In a big, world wide disaster movie. Now's the time to take action! Everybody! Drop what you're doing and cooperate on a plan. A happy ending. What do you suppose are the odds? Considering that homo sapiens is lazy and ignorant. Could the energetic and brilliant come to the rescue? We'd all have to cooperate. By the billions. Ain't that a bitch? Let's face it, we've run up our numbers to the point where we don't have a lot of wiggle room. As the waters keep rising, a few hardy souls gather up survival gear and head for the Antarctic. Will any actually survive? Not if they hunt to extinction. Not if the bastards left to drown set off the nukes

it is a slow process ,but nevertheless a lot of people have died suffered or lost everything because of related climatic happenings

check this interactive globe

Global warming is but a component, in a group of destructive forces at work such as ;deforestation, desertification, soil and water contamination ,irresponsible or wasteful utilization of bio resources , air pollution,Non sustainable Agriculture, over pumping carbon aquifers

all concepts which are definitely not part of the Natural Processes of the Natural world

WHICH WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR,

The most prolific growth on this planet is part of the day in the mist and most of the time under clouds ,and the least growth is always directly in the sun .
To exchange the one for the other means changing local climates

We are exchanging Nature with Tar , concrete and open spaced mono cultures.

In 300 years half of the planets forests have gone ,and in the last 50 years half of the wet lands ,and rain forests

These Areas absorb heat during the day and release heat at night ,
Cause cloud formation(shade).humidifying the air on the surface as well as releasing excess water at the roots that keep rivers flowing ,which in turn brings more water into the Environment .
As well as contributing to absorbing carbon emissions as do the leaves of the trees together with the oceans .

All in all many factors which directly affect the local Environment .
The loss of the above resulting in rivers drying up ,less rain ,desertification, loss of habitat for many species and so on.
dryer and hotter surface environments which can manifest in different weather patterns such as tornadoes or bush fires

I may be stupid or Naive but somehow i believe that lots of these local environmental changes, can add up to affect global weather, If there are enough of them (and there are)

And then on top of that comes the story of the effects of pollutants released into Nature and especially the Air ,by MAN ,http://earthissues.multiply.com/photos/a lbum/5/EMISSIONS

A cocktail of events and a lot of the ingredients have MAN written all over them

So it is safe to assume that we should look at ourselves ,for possible improvements ,and rectifying Eco errors that are with in our powers.

What is a safer bet
to be or not to be

  • Outdoor Survival Tips – Ten Uncommon Ones | Sports and Recreation ...

The outdoor survival tips you\’ll find here are not the usual fare. They come from the unusual techniques that myself and others have experimented with. Keep them in mind in case the day comes when you are lost in the wilderness.

Outdoor Survival Tips – Fire Making

    1. Pull a piece of pack rat nest loose to use for tinder. These are usually found under rock ledges and in small caves, so they are dry even when it is raining. They are commonly full of plant fuzz, dry grass and other flammable materials.

    2. Polish the bottom of an aluminum pop or beer can, and you can use it to focus the sun\’s rays to start a fire. Chocolate has been used to do the polishing, but you can also experiment with various natural substances. This is not easy, and probably not possible if the sun is too low, or the can not shiny enough, but I have seen it work. Point the can-bottom at the sun and focus the rays to a small point of light on a piece of natural tinder or paper (a dollar bill works well).
