Recently we have been having quite a few Earth quakes were i live, and i am getting nervous that the big one may go soon. I want to be prepared. Here is what i have so far in my kit. Please let me know if i may need something else. Thanks.
1. Flash light with extra batteries
2.Matches
3Paper and 2 pens
4. 2 Chap sticks
5.Food to last 3 days or more
6. Bottles water (not sure how much if that to pack) please give me an example.
7.Cell Phone
8. Money(probably $10 or more)
9. String or rope
10.Some type of blanket.
12. Hair ties
13.Band aids and gauze.
For water approx. 1 gallon/person per day I would buy a first aid kit in CVS they cost less than 20 bucks other than that the are darn usefull, other than that you seen set!
Staying with the survival kit theme, here a few of the many ways to use a survival blanket.
I just read the first few chapter of Stirling's Dies the Fire (the economic and social infrastructure collapses.) I ordered water purification tablets, emergency blankets, and a hand cranked radio/flashlight. Also emergency food bars.
I did not spend a ton of money, and I have the money to spend.
Have I gone paranoid nuts? In a way, I hope I have...
~lol~ It's a great series, isn't it? I really like Stirling's books. I think there are about six books or so in that particular series, with another one coming this year.
However if you stop and think about it, that particular series is not very realistic.
Guns, and combustion engines "suddenly" for some mystical reason stop working? Hmmm. Still, I have very much enjoyed reading the books.
I could tell you a few books that would REALLY make you paranoid, but I'll be kind, and not do that.
However, I will state that being prepared for emergencies is NEVER a bad thing. We have about two years worth of food storage, and all kinds of emergency supplies.
The current ecconomic situation is a very bad thing. So are things like UG99 (bet you don't even know what that is).
You need to get some books, and join some good groups on food storage, and preparedness if you really want to head down that road. Otherwise as a newbie you will waste money, and buy things that will potentially be useless and end up harming or killing you if you are trying to depend on them.
I'm in my 40's. I've long thought, and long said that in my lifetime I will see World War III, a world pandemic, and famine in first world countries (with people actually starving to death).
Lots of people choose to poo-poo that idea. But what if I'm right, and they are wrong? Would they rather have their Hummer, and vacation cruze memories, or the food storage I have?

I want to have an emergency survival kit in my car with things like , bandages, knife, hatchet, matches, food, water, blanket, flares, etc.
Where I live it freezes and water in the car will freeze. I'm concerned about the water container breaking from the expanding freezing water. I don't want to find water spilled and a musty trunk.
Ideas?
Paranoid to have an emergency kit. Maybe.
But, hmmm. You missed the time that I gashed my leg open on a rock while hiking in the mountains. Some first aid supplies would've been useful.
How about CNet editor, James Kim, and his family stuck in the mountains for 11 days! Kim died of hypothermia when he went to get help for his family. Food, blankets, hatchet and matches would have been very useful.http://www.news.com/2100-1028_3-6141498. html
Or maybe you missed the story about people in stuck on their roofs with no food or water during a flood in New Orleans a couple of years ago.
Or possiblity of a chemical or nuclear attack on your city and you have to evacuate immediately. 2 million people are trying to use the same road you are. Gridlock for many, many hours. You have 4 young kids to keep from dehydrating.
Will anything happen? Who knows, but it wouldn't hurt to be prepared. Maybe I can use it to help someone else instead. Shoulda been a boyscout.
Purchase the water pouches put out by Datrex or Mainstay.
Their made for extreme storage conditions and would survive life in your trunk. They come in 4.6 ounce pouches so they pack easy.
Their life span is 5 years and approved by the coast guard. I would not go the full 5 years in the trunk, I'd probably go 2-3 years tops to play it safe.

I was wondering what to include in a survival kit to keep in my car. I know a first aid kit is a definate, space blanket, and food. But what else should I include? I've seen ones on eBay that are complete and cover the basics to up to a week, but I don't want to pay $80 + for a emergency kit for my car if I can make one myself cheaper.
So what should I include? Please make a complete list, and if you know the average price please include that as well. And if you know of a website that has information on what to have in one then post it as well. Thanks.
Three most important things:
1. Communication: A way of signalling distress (the old mobile phone sounds like a good idea, I might have to implement that). Also, some way of warning passing drivers may well be a good idea.
2. Survival: Depends where, when you are. Blankets/coats, food/water. Fire extinguisher should be included anyway, and like you say, first aid kit.
3. Maintenance: Basic knowledge and equipment for common faults in cars (wheel changes, mud/snow situations etc.).
That lot should hopefully keep you covered.
Do you have a 72 hour survival kit at home with 4 litres of water per person per day with enough to last a minimum of 3 days, how about food, water purification tablets, solar blankets, tarps, spare cloths, do you have a check list of emergency needs during a survival situation?

We dont. It worries me a little bit.

Incorrect item description – Jon Cowen – Amazon offered me a refund, so that they are not guilty. However, Member Description This is a package of four, but if the order, you will receive only a blanket. There are many places that offer these for about $ 1.00 each. My suggestion is that you find one of these suppliers, as most of mylar blankets are the same. I have notified Amazon and requested that change the product description to reflect that this is a blanket and a pack of four. The blankets are fantastic andgreat to carry in your car for an emergency situation.
