Family Survival

I am writing an essay about family and survival in the book night. Mainly about how Elie survived mainly because of his dad.

i also need some more to write about how Elie also feels obligated to keep his dad alive, which in turn keeps him alive.

In the beginning of the story, Wiesel's father was the patriarch not just to the family, but to the community. When the Germans occupied Sighet, the neighbors would sought the advice of Wiesel's father.

Upon arrival at Auschwitz, Wiesel and his father were separated from the women. That meant that they only had each other to depend on for survival. The father was still somewhat the patriarch. He advised Wiesel not to draw attention to himself and even prisoners who knew him before, came to him.

At Buna, the father was often picked on because he was not working hard enough and that he could not march in step. He was beatened pretty badly by Idek and Franek, two of the Kapos in charge. Wiesel tried to teach his father to march in step and how to avoid the Kapos blows, but it did not work. When they learned the Red Army was advancing, Wiesel suggested that they evacuate with the others. As they ran through the snow, Wiesel's main focus was not to let his father out of his sight.

By the time they reached Buchenwald, his father was at his wit's end. Elie bacame the "patriarch" as he wouldn't let his father die in the snow and he tried to reassure him that he will lie in a bed pretty soon. His father guilt tripped him as he wanted water to relieve his fever. Wiesel knew that he must not drink, but he gave in because he did not want to disappoint him. An S.S. shouted at him to be quiet, but he still kept calling Eliezer's name. His father was killed.

what are the reasons why traditional family is needed for our society's survival?

There is no need. Some cultures raise children as a group rather than just a mother and father. This isn't unheard of in the least. Other than that though, I can't think of anything that would make a family structure necessary. The only thing might be that it is a biochemical balance that is necessary for a mother to care for her children. There are emotional and physical attachments to your personal children.

I moved 800 miles away from my family. It works really well.
