Why are caterpillars not recommended for survival food?

I have seen several sites that say to stay away from eating caterpillars in a survival situation, but none seem to have an explanation as to why not?

It's a bit like wild mushrooms; if you're an expert you can eat this sort of thing. Many caterpillars defend their otherwise defenseless bodies with harsh chemicals. They may either taste terrible or make you sick. Different species often look similar.

Grubs are safer because they're defended by the surrounding wood or soil and so they have had less pressure to evolve inedibility.

What would be the best survival food for my Obama Pantry?

The military MRE's are not sold on the civilian market. There are civilian knock offs which seem OK. Any suggestions?
.

We have at least a two year supply of canned and dry goods on hand and have been stockpiling for quite some time. There are other alternatives out there, such as:

Freeze-dried foods and military style Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are convenient types of foods to have on hand for emergencies. These are available from outdoor supply stores, survivalist stores and via the Internet. There are various types of MREs that can be purchased in kits with quantities to feed families for up to a year.

Warehouse stores like Costco sell freeze-dried emergency food kits in plastic buckets with as many as 275 servings for about $85. That would be enough to feed a family of four for three weeks.

How is it that some people can afford to buy drugs but can't pay their bills and buy food for survival?

I was just reading the newspaper and I see all the drug charges that some people have for buying drugs. I don't get it. If you can buy drugs, why not use the money instead to pay your bills.

1) The drugs have so badley messed up their minds that they can no longer prioritize and think straight.

2) Drugs are their only one desire and priority when they're addicted. They know that they have to pay their bills but they're so dumb and irresponsible that they would rather waste their money on drugs.

It is sad but that is how people are.

Who has the best "survival food" products?

A little off topic, but I dont see a better section for it. If really tough times are coming and we should be prepared for short term (a month?) emergency rations, who do you recommmend?

  • Water and Food Storage | Survival Logistics

Food grade 55 gallon storage containers are very expensive, unless you are lucky enough to find a company that is willing to get rid of them cheap.

I have found non-food grade 55-gallon containers fairly inexpensive that once contained detergent. I fill these up with water when a hurricane is in the gulf and use the water for flushing toilets, washing clothes and dishes or even bathing.

Yea thats why I inserted that into the video about the home containers. You can drink any water IF you purify it no matter what container it is in. It can be drank safely if you sterilize the water, however its DEFINATELY not safe to drink any of the water straight out of the bottles stored in home containers. Also as a note.. Bacteria grow very well in canteens and camelbaks that are not thoroughly dried prior to storage. Good points!
