What is the best fixed blade survival knife in your opinion?

Regardless of price what is the best fixed blade survival knife for general purpose woodland survival? Kabar, Kershaw, Benchmade, Gerber, Cold Steel, Ontario, Fallkniven, SOG, Busse...etc? What make and model in your opinion? I want a full tang design. Please don't tell me a Rambo knife with compass and a hollow handle for holding fishing line and hooks. lol.

There is an endless debate what a survival knife should be, small utility blade or larger one that can take and dish out lots of punishment.

If you go with second definition, then Busse knives are probably on top of the list. Very tough, pretty much indestructible and unusually high wear resistance and edge holding for those types of knives.

I own (and owned) Busses, Cold Steels, Sogs, Benchmades and bunch of other fixed blades. The toughest are Busses for sure.
As for the Cold Steel tests I am very skeptical about those, because they void the warranty if you try to replicate the tests.

My vote for heavy duty blades goes to Busse or if you are on the budget then Swamp Rat knives(SRKW).

SRKW review - http://zknives.com/knives/fixed/srkw/ind ex.shtml

If you want something more exotic the kukris are also quite versatile and very tough use knives.

Those are the knives that you can cut, chop and pry with.

For more utility type knives benchmade Nimravus is pretty good and not too expensive.
Fallkniven A1 is also quite tough knife from decent steel VG-10.

Cold Steel SRK was a good knife in older version of Carbon V steel. new ones are not as good unfortunately. Though, nowhere near to Busse or SRKW in heavy duty use.

All of those knives are full tang design.

What is the best utility/survival/combat sheath knife for military service?

I want either a Ka-Bar Marine knife, a Glock field knife, or a Gerber LMF II.
Any suggestions?
The knife will be used for survival/field utilitarian type functions.
The Glock knife is $30, the Ka-Bar is $60, the Gerber is $100.

Being a former Marine, it's hard not to like my Ka-Bar. Unless you want to be like Rambo (and you are not going to survive very long), I would avoid it as it's main purpose is for close quarters combat. Ka-Bar is probably the best American made combat knife around as it has been battle tested and hasn't changed since before WWII. KA-Bar does have other knives as well besides the standard issue. Your question is a little vague though. If you are looking at a knife that is for survival, a standard combat knife is not the way to go. Out of the three you listed, the Gerber is more of a true "survival knife". Do some research on other brands as well. Just because a knife has a higher price tag, doesn't mean it's the best. Look for functions that the knife has to offer, durability, etc.

What is the best survival knife on the market?

I have heard that it was the Gerber LMF II but does anyone know others that are just as good? I prefer fixed blade and i dont have a preference when it come to stainless vs. carbon steel, also it needs to be full tang.

Which brand of knives for personal dive knife selection?

Hi,

I would like to look for a fixed blade knife from either Gerber, SOG or Cold Steel knife as a dive knife or as survival knife. Which brand and model should I go for and why? Thanks!

I use Gerber muti-tool ( Gerber FliK Multi-Plier Needlenose Black; from the website) and it hasn't let me down yet. I have used on pouring-rain campouts, so I would trust it underwater. My lock blade is a Buck knife I got at walmart, and I would trust both of them with my life.

The muti-tool also came into use in High School, I was a member of Tech Crew and my Gerber was well-used.

i have a question about the gerber lmf 2 knife...?

would anyone consider this to be a combat knife other than a survival knife? jw....

well to an extent a combat knife... this is because of the serrated edge... very uncommon in a survival knife and the shape of the blade, which isnt as spear head shaped as a good survival knife... most high quality survival knifes have carbon steel blade... but this isnt really important, stainless steel is also pretty good
so combat knife though its a pretty close call
