The Handmaid's tale, byt Margaret Atwood?

How does Atwood create the theme of survival in the Handmaid’s Tale?

this is an essay question i have to answer, i was just wondering if there are any sites that will help me answer it. or if you have studied or read the book yourself, i need other views, (doesnt have to be by a critic) to get higher marks. any help would do great.

  • The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood

The future is full of rich people in sterile compounds, poor people in decaying inner cities, and genetically modified animals like liolambs and mo’hairs. The God’s Gardeners eco-cult are preparing for the waterless flood. As the flood begins to hit home, follow the main characters and see how they survive post-flood.

Margaret Atwood is on top form here. The Year of the Flood isn’t so much a sequel to her novel Oryx and Crake as a companion novel. Many of the plot points intersect, as do characters and time line. Finding out whether people survive and how is part of what makes this story so enthralling.

I really liked this book. With the way that the environment is going, as well as the way society is, this story doesn’t seem too far off the mark of truth. The short chapters also kept me turning pages and made it easy to start and stop reading as I had the time.
