Why do we have all these survival/nuclear fallout movies and shows?

Recently, these have been popping up on the internet and t.v. Discovery channel, yahoo, and plenty more. They have shows and articles detailing what to do in a nuclear fallout situation. And they are remaking red dawn lulz.

I think the 2012 bit is a lot of it. But it may just be that some folks have noticed that since the "end" of the Cold War, we have not reduced the number of nuclear weapons around the world -- in fact the number has increased Something like that cannot exist in a vacuum, but since it currently isn't socially acceptable to talk about it with all the other global and regional problems/crises, it seems to be coming out in the popular "art" of TV and movies. I would actually argue that 2012 is a symptom of this back-burner paranoia, rather than a cause of it. Not a great thing to have to think about, but not really something we can ignore, either...

Just a guess. But then, I think that rain is wet, so who am I to say?

What is a good name or title for a horror survival nuclear holocaust story?

Im doing a graphic novel on earth after it was wiped out by an intercontinental war and all that remains are few survivors, cannibals, and mutants. all i need are your suggestions for a good name

For inspiration, try looking on Wikipedia for post-apocalyptic novels for naming inspiration; some are "On The Beach," "Alas, Babylon," and "Warday," to name three examples.

"Alas, Babylon" took its title from a poem, and "Warday" refers to the date a nuclear exchange took place between the United States and the Soviet Union (the book was published circa 1986-87).

Any survival techniques to survive a nuclear holocaust?

I am not crazy! I am just curious to find out any survival techniques to survive a nuclear war.

There are two major techniques that will help a lot. Neither is easy to do and the second is quite expensive.

1) Set up your life so you don't live in or near a major city or large military base. These are what are called "strategic targets". If a nuclear war went on long enough, even small cities and bases might get hit; after all, they're secondary targets. But for sure, cities like NYC or Atlanta and bases like Parris Island or Offutt AFB are going to get hit first.

2) Get access to a secure underground shelter protected by at least ten feet of concrete or natural rock. It needs to have a high quality air filtration system, a hatch designed to resist "overpressure" (ie, shock waves from nuclear explosions) , and sufficient supplies to say inside for at least a year.

If you can do both of these, you have a very good chance of surviving a nuclear holocaust. If you can only do one, well you have a good chance. If you do neither, then you still have a chance because some people will make it through on sheer dumb luck. Personally, I prefer to be in control of my destiny than to rely on luck....

Any good survival books on nuclear war?

does anyone know any good nuclear war survival books not old ones from the 80's or anything books that came out from at least 2003

No such thing exists. An all out nuke war is not survivable. Build an underground shelter, and you still need air vents leading to the surface. Super hot air from a nuke blast will rush down your air vents and cook you; turning your shelter into a convection oven. If you have your own air recyc via your own nuke reactor, and so don't need vents to the surface, you still have to stay underground until the radiation dies down to safe levels...which will take hundreds of thousands of years at least. You can't store enough food/water to last that long. Come up too soon, and you die of radiation poisoning. If you have a multi-trillion dollar shelter with nuke power, closed recyc air system, and hydroponic gardens, etc, you still live like a rat...if everything works. However, nothing electrical will work...so your engines, radios, nuke plant, etc, will not work...having been destroyed by the EMP the nuke blast generated. Surviving a nuke war is a stupid fantasy concocted by lieing politicians, and hollywood scriptwriters, and bad sci-fi authors. No one will survive a nuke war...not even in NORAD type shelters Since a nuke war can not be survived, there can be no good books about surviving a nuke war.
