Is anyone aware of a good outdoor/survival training school?

Is anyone aware of a good outdoor/survival training school? Nothing outrageous, mainly something to get me back in touch with my natural instincts. Ideally, I'd like to hear from someone with personal experience but not a must.
Thank you!

Survival training ?

Is it possible to get real, outdoor survival training, outside of joining the military? Almost like pseudo-military training, except without the commitment or having to actually join a faction? No sarcasm intended. What kind of training do modern day mercenaries undergo (not that I want to make a living out of taking people out, just out of curiosity)?
Eh. Boy Scouts aren't all they're cracked up to be.

I hear the boy scouts are real bad asses.

Outdoor Leadership Training?

Has anyone heard of NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School)? Are there others institutions for survival training? Better/Worse, etc?

The Sierra Club offers several Leadership courses, The Boy Scouts Of America do as well.

Why are outdoor survival courses linked to NLP (neuro-linguistic programming)?

I have noticed that some people (often ex-Military and martial arts experts) are both involved in selling outdoor courses like map-reading, survival skills, endurance events and at the same time own websites offering hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming training? I wondered what the link was, if any?

I think the link is simply due to the fact that NLP is about modeling excellence. So whether it has to do with sports, or other applications, NLP is a tool to help you get better.

If you are a Marine active duty can you sign up for training courses unrelated to your MOS?

For example, say I am 7051 Aircraft Firefighting, can I attend the outdoor survival course if I wanted to. (I've asked my recruiter, but I want to hear some other answers)
What about MCMAP?

You dont sign up for anything..You have to be recommended to attend classes..

Its not as if they come out with a list of classes and then you pick..It does not work this way..

In all the classes I attended I never saw someone out of the unit..Either your unit does it as a whole or you dont go..Every class I attended was made up of combat infantry MOS's..

If there was a aircraft maintenance class why would they allow a infantry man to attend this class? You only attend classes that you need or will benefit your unit..

The only people who got to attend classes that did not need them were cooks..The cooks in our unit every now and then would volunteers to do a "jungle warfare" course..But they were in our unit...

If your thinking of becomming a Aircraft Fireman and then trying to get into classes such as Call For Fire school, or Jungle Warfare Training, or any other infantry class than the answer is NO...

Its the same concept as you will never be allowed to try out for Sniper school because you have no need for it.

  • 10 Essential Skills Necessary for Survival

Preparing for emergencies and disasters involves much more than just stock piling canned goods and freeze dried foods. Whether you are in rural America or in suburbia, consider learning some new skills this year. If you ever need to barter for goods, your skills may be the best monetary unit you possess. Oh, and they might even save your life!

Tess Pennington of Ready Nutrition provides some recommendations in 10 Essential Skills Necessary for Survival :

Although it is important to be prepared for disaster situations, many are not adequately trained to handle the disaster situations in which they find themselves. Having the proper skills and training will provide an individual with a well diversified knowledge base on how to survive during and after a disaster.
