I guess my biggest concern is "cab etiquette".
How much do I tip, how do I keep from stealing someone else's cab or having mine taken, etc.
Are most New Yorkers tolerant of tourist?
Where should I avoid at night, such as anyplace in Central Park.
Any hidden secrets that most visitors don't know about?
Thanks! Clueless...
DO NOT ADMIT YOU ARE A TOURIST or you will have your @ss kicked all the way to Utica...seriously.
Tip about ten percent usually.
Use common sense at night and stay in well-lit places.
Don't worry about "cab-stealing", and if someone starts to get into the cab you've hailed, start yelling random obcenities until a) they get out or b) the cab drives off.
Have fun!

I want to plant a vegetable garden for survival purposes. We are running out of oil which I believe might bring a collapse of our very oil dependent food system.
Any advice what to grow or good resources websites about this. Also backyard "Fish farming."
Well depending on your current occupation a survival garden might not be enough for you if the oil system blows up. If you have a trade/vocational job then, you should be able to barter food and clothing in exchange for your work. If you have a desk job then a garden might be a good idea.
To begin with any garden you need to look at the space you have to work with and compare it to the kind of veggies and fruits you are trying to grow. Things that grow on a vine needs lot of room to grow, and more care. Where non-vine crops generally don't need a lot of your time, but do need a constant supply of sun and water.
Next, I believe that a survival garden should be of two parts, staple & cash crop garden.
Staple garden - is your own personal garden to feed you and your family. This garden should contain foods that are practical, if it happens to coincide with foods you like to eat great, but we are talking about survival not a pleasure garden.
Cash garden - This is stock you can sell/share/trade with others for things you need. (So next time you visit the grocery store check out what your neighbors are buying). This garden might have some non-practical foods in it. People will always like their luxuries so who are you not to provide it.
With these things in mind you should be able to decide what kind of foods to grow. Once you decide check the rest of the forum for tips on garden layout and how to grow a successful garden.
P.S.: You should also keep to yourself the purpose of your garden to prevent raiding should the worse comes to past. And you might want to take up a hobby to help supplement either your income or food supply in a post oil world.

I am looking for a book similar to the US Army's Survival Manual. However, the Army's survival guide does not have a section on urban survival. I live in a major city and want to get information on where to get water, food and shelter in the event I run out of supplies in a war, financial collapse, governmental take-over or natural disaster. I like the book "Steal This Book," but the information in it is very outdated from the 1970s. Anyone know of some comparable books? Thanks.
A better idea would be for you to take some classes in first aid and volunteer to participate in disaster relief drills. If you look around you can find many opportunities to prepare yourself to make a difference after a disaster.

I'm going to be a freshman this year and I am so nervous! I'm scared of all the drama and of seniors. Will they kill me? Please give me any tips you might have on high school.
Look I am going to be a junior in high school and I can still remember my first day of freshman year. I cried like a baby. It's not as bad as you think. You will be so busy trying to get to classes that your fears will melt away. Relax because the worst possible thing you can do is freak out. That makes thing way more complicated then they have to be. Walk into your new school like you own the place. Have your held high and be brave. High school is new experience that will change and carve you out for the rest of your life. High school will turn out to be one of the best times of your life. You'll blossom into a new unique person. You'll do things that you never thought possible. You'll be friends with people that you'd never even dreamed of meeting. as far as bulling goes it's considered hazing and people can be expelled or even suspended for acting out against freshman. Last year @ my school we had 15 people suspended for the first two weeks for throwing pennies at the new freshman. Relax don't freak out. Just remember to breathe. Look forward though to finding really cute guys. If you can survive the first day of freshman year then that is an accomplishment in its self.
Good luck Freshie
hey everyone iam going to a panic at the disco concert in october and iam planning to get there super early to get front row in the mosh..i have never been in the front..the closest i ever been was like 4th row and i hated so much pushing and you feel like your gonna die..that was at a avenged sevenfold concert.so is it gonna be the same or will it be worse..iam nervous for that..advice?
ps-there will be other bands there such as plain white t's,the cab,and dashboard confessional
Panic at the disco is going to be tame compared to Avenged Sevenfold.
Most likely there will be pushing (not as bad as avenged sevenfold) and crowd surfing.
Being where the bars are is going to be worse than 4th row.
Your body is going to be pushing into the bars and end up getting bruises.
If you dont want to deal with that just watch from the back you wont have to worry about getting pushed or feeling like your going to die.
Advice stand your ground in the crowd
Dont be afraid to push people that are squishing you.
Bring water to keep yourself hydrated.

The Hotspotter » 3rd World Earthquake Survival Advice

I was forwarded this viral email today. While I don’t generally trust “fw: emails” particularly ones with absolute statements like “100 percent survivability”, this one make some sense on the surface. So, I did my obligatory Snopes check and it did not pass, but it didn’t fail either. After some additional research which included a message from the Red Cross , I have come to a conclusion.
The US and other first world countries’ strictly enforce building codes, requiring structures meet or exceed massive earthquake resistance specifications. Even older buildings require earthquake retrofits if they undergo significant enough other tangential improvements. So if you are in such a building, the fear isn’t necessarily that the building will collapse. The fear is that light fixture and giant mirror falling on you, in which case the standard “Drop, cover and hold on” message makes tremendous sense.
