I am a outdoorsman. I have education in business and Forestry/ Fish and wildlife. I am in Ontario and I will be either hiking or biking across Canada with my destination being Victoria. I would like to raise more awarness of how easy it can be to just life off the land. That society needs to simplify. Our laziness, greed, our desire to advance and our hunger for power and riches will ruin us as a whole. I want to show that we all can survive here on earth with nothing more than survival skills. Thats why Im going to travel without any money. Live off the land. Film everything and let people see how easy it is. I figure its a start. Who do I tell, how do I start.
It sounds like you need to start with something like a documentary and maybe a grant to make the documentary. This would be the way to get enough interest and backing to get to the point of turning it into more. Starting a non-profit actually costs money to get all the paperwork and all completed. It also takes quite a bit of time. I hope you can accomplish it because I think you're so right. Society is headed downhill right now and someone needs to give it a kick in the butt to get back on track and stop being so materialistic.

Do charities really help Africans, or simply make their rich masters wealthier, and their countries more dependent still on the West for survival?
The evidence overwhelmingly shows that they do only harm. Africa has had charity and international aid on an unprecedented scale since WWII. And the place is worse off than it was before WWII. If you look at the big global charities - Christian Aid, Action Aid, Save the Children etc. - they are mega-corporations who only ever get richer themselves while never working themselves out of business. That tells you all you need to know about how effective they are.

Key word being forced. I have no issue with charity and helping others. My problem is when I lose the ability to make the decisions myself and am forced by government.
Heike P I don't know how you were able to determine my financial situation just by reading my question but for your information everything that I have in life I have worked hard for. My house, my cars, and all else. It was not given to me. You and all your peers can do the same.
Of course we should not be forced to. I wish the so called "poor" would stop whining too. I don't think it's necessarily "poverty" when you have nice bling, cell phones, 48" tv's, and smoke cigarettes and drink a lot- and then have the audacity to demand healthcare. It's all about priorities and these people could help themselves like everyone else has to.

I am talking about giving to charities, or jumping in freezing cold water to save someone from drowning, or running into a burning building to save a person. If there is no moral ground to stand on then why do we consider these things respectable? Why is the person that does these things a 'hero'?
You're talking about altruism. Altruism is also found in animals, like bees and naked mole rats. It all has to do with degrees of kinship.
You should read "The Altruism Equation" by Lee Alan Dugatkin. It's pretty amazing.
acquire what they need, food, clothes etc.. In the olden days thieving was viewed as different to today. example pirates. pickpockets were admired for their skill. Prior to the development of charities and welfare systems people relied on theft to acquire the necessary resources for survival. Is it accpetable for a mother to steal food for her starving children? should she be put into prison? it's only instinct to take what we need? the bible told us stealing was wrong, not instinct.
ok think Ned Kelly as an example...
the crime of stealing is defined by society, its laws. the bible's contribution can only be considered for those who read it. admittedly, the laws and mores of a society are determined greatly by the prominant religion. but we don't stop ourselves from stealing (even in the event of great need) because the bible says it is wrong. the fact is jail time keeps most people honest or at least makes them better criminals. yes i believe that doing anything to survive is instinctual. if that meant digging through the trash i would. if it means stealing from someone who seems to have more than me i would. for my child's survival, i would gladly risk any punishment. i would forgive the mother who does the same.

Doodles Raise $20650 For Cure Kids Charity | TVNZ | News | Throng
Over $20,000 has been raised for Cure Kids at auction by a couple of doodles of an alternative NZ Flag that were considered by most as not very good art.
Prime Minister John Key’s Flag doodle sold last night on Trade Me for $10,150 to Elite International School of Beauty and Spa Therapies Director, Simon Harding. Mr Key made it clear before he began drawing that he wasn’t an artist but within 24 hours of listing the art work the bidding was up over $3,000.
Late last week Breakfast reporter, Matty McLean decided to doodle himself drawing a very odd animal dubbed Shiwi because of the uncertainty as to whether it was a Sheep or a Kiwi. Shiwi was put up for auction with Matt announcing a tongue-in-cheek challenge suggesting he would raise more money for Cure Kids than the Prime Minister with his doodle.
