Need a good GPS and a mini survival kit for hiking?

I got off the trail in the national forest and had to spend the night with nothing but a pair of shorts and tee shirt. So, now I'm looking for a good GPS that will retrace my steps.
I also want a mini survival kit to fit in a fanny pack. I could have used matches, something to cut tree limbs, space blanket, compass, flashlight and a GPS. Should I just purchase these separately or is there a good website that sells this in a small pack.

if you want a gps get one by garmin however you should only need the most basic in the range as for the surival kit try this although some of it is a bit OTT

What are the 15 items from the subarctic survival simulation? What is the rank order of importance?

I think they are: Magnetic Compass
Gallon Can of Maple Syrup
Sleeping Bag
Bottle of Water Purification Tablets
20ft by 20ft Heavy Canvas
13 Wood Matches
250ft Rope
Working Flashlight
Pair of Snowshoes
Fifth of Bacardi
Shaving Kit w/ Mirror
Alarm Clock
Hand Axe
Innertube of 14 Inch Wheel
Northern Star Navigation (book)

Does anyone know what order they should go in? More importantly, why?

There must be more than one subarctic survival simulation. The following link has several survival simulations which I have used over the years, including a subarctic survival. Since these are copyrighted, I will not give you the exact listing and reasons why. However, they exist. There is even a video you can use. Good luck

Is fire really a priority in a survival situation?

My girlfriend did this team building excercise where you had to rate 15 items by their importance for survival in the wilderness of Newfoundand Canada in October. The students then were graded on the difference between their ratings and the ratings of a survival expert. Here are the expert's ratings:
1. waterproof matches
2.hand axe
3. heavy duty canvas
4. sleeping bag
5. gallon maple syrup
6. braided nylon rope
7. snowshoes
8. inner tube
9. shaving kit and mirror
10. flashlight
11.bacardi rum
12.alarm clock
13.compass
14.celestial navigation book
15.water purification tablets
Some of the students disagreed with fire being the number one priority. Any opinions? There were more details about the situation and a map included but it would be too lengthy to include here. I just don't think that you must have fire.
I think I would always put the sleeping bag and tarp first and second. I might even take the axe before the matches. You cannot warm yourself externally. You can only slow down heat loss. Body heat must come from metabolization of calories. Eating and excercising is the only way to make body heat. After that, you just need to insulate yourself and stay dry.
I think that alot of survival training comes from a military standpoint. They are taking defense into account. Build a stronghold, defend it, and wait for support troops.
The fire seems like more of a mental thing and a way to pass time. I guess if I knew there were polar bears around, I might make matches number one, but then there might not be any wood to burn in polar bear habitat, right? Anyone with experience?

I may be cheating here, but I have used this activity a number of times in my career. As I recall, there were two reasons for the fire, one you were stranded in Canada or Norther MN in the middle of winter and second, the smoke could be seen by rescue planes. So, yes I believe fire would be important for getting rescued.

Why do I need 'one square yard of aluminum foil' in my Survival Kit?

Where can I find Waterproof, strike anywhere matches?

Where can I find Waterproof, battery-less flashlights?

Where can I find free topographic maps?

Is there a product called 'smoke signals' ? Where can I get them?

Thanks in advance. I am putting together a Survival Kit.

Aluminum foil is fairly generically useful. You're most likely to use it as an improvised container / pot, as it can contain water and handles heat quite nicely. It's also a large mirror, whether you're bouncing radio or light, when rescuers are looking for you, mirrors are very good thing. By the way, a foil tag on a branch isn't such a bad way of marking a trail, especially if you take the time to twist it on securely, and leave a nice large tag, which your flashlight can spot at night.

Battery-less flashlights can easily be found by googling "shake flashlight", as you charge them by shaking. They are a great choice for the flashlight you put in the car, next to your bed, and by the fuse box. The light is generally not as bright as a maglight, but not having to buy or swap batteries makes them much more affordable to keep around. http://www.survivalsolutions.com/store/p age8.html For a survival kit on a budget, these are wonderful: http://www.amazon.com/Illuminator-Powere d-focused-flashlight-charger/dp/B000HF2R VI/ref=pd_sbs_sg_3/102-0845529-2108940
For topographic maps, stop by the local library, and bring a few nickels for the photocopier. If you're looking for maps of the best places to hike locally, I'd also post on freecycle, and check with your local hiking groups for old, unused maps. Don't forget detailed local road maps in your emergency kit, it can be worthwhile to mark at least one flood route, and at least two back routes you could use in case of natural disaster.
- By the way, topographic maps are most useful when you're trying to navigate an area with few roads. If you're planning to really use it, paying a few bucks to have your map all in one piece can make things much less confusing.

I've found orange Smoke Signals made by a few companies, including Orion and Wessex. You can buy them here: http://www.landfallnav.com/-ssohs.html
Military surplus stores and good camping stores can be great places to visit when you're stocking a survival kit. If you arrive during times when they're not busy (probably weekdays) the clerk may have very good advice, especially in the smaller stores, many clerks are experienced campers. EMS http://www.ems.com is my current favorite, but many suplus stores are run by smart old veterans, who have great advice. They'll have all the little essentials like matches and waterproof containers for them.

One last piece of advice: a small all in one like this, which just sits in your pocket, can be invaluable. They're also allowed onto airplanes with you, and when the matches aren't allowed, the magnifying glass is a good emergency replacement.
