I am getting a bit worried regarding the recent Wall Street problems. I have seen and heard about the Great Depression. I would like to know what foods I could buy that would have a shelf life of about a year that also would be tasty enough to eat if my prediction is wrong.
Canned goods.....SPAM was the poor mans steak.
Peaches & Fruit Cocktail the poor
mans dessert
Tuna---the poor mans fish
Peas & Carrots....
Vienna Sausage
Rice
Dried Beans
Pasta
I know I've made my point...canned goods last & these days can be bought in bulk at Costco & Sam's Clubs.
I could go on & on......my grandmother never was without those "staples" in the pantry.
I am worried too.......I am watching the government in cahoots with Wall Street piss my 401K away...let's all hope the can goods we are buying won't be dog or cat food for us to eat.
Yoders bacon rocks as a long term storage food for many reasons like.. It is Heat pasteurized in a sealed can 100% USDA Bacon, Packed in the US No ...
I once read that with 5 or 6 foods one could survive indefinitely.
So I am interested in survival on the fewest different foods, and what specifically those foods are.
Interesting question.
#1 green vegetable like kale, or spinach
#2 fruits like grapefruit or cherries or blueberries.
#3 Water
#4 salt
#5 freshly caught fish or organic chicken
#6 sunlight & air
I know sunlight isn't food, but we need it for vitamin D.

I want to start stocking up on survival foods (freeze dried, vaccuum packed, stuff like that). I would like to make it home made, I have a dehydrator, or food I can buy at the grocery store. Thanks.
They have found grains hundreds and even thousands of years old that were stored in a dry dark environment that still germinated and grew. The key here is a cool dry place devoid of light. In such a place grains and plant seeds can be kept for decades. Dry beans, rice and corn kept very well some nuts do however some nuts do not.
I keep food grade 30 gallon barrels full of rice, beans, corn, flour, powdered milk and 5 gallon buckets with many other dried foods. All are in sealed containers kept in a root cellar.
Canned good can be kept for a few years but dried foods keep much longer.
Meat can be jerked with a high salt content and vacuumed sealed for several years.
Unopened vinegar, maple syrup, cooking oil, and other such things will last for years in the unopened factory container.

I'm wondering, as i'm assume others might have pondered this question as well, what foods would be good to store up, that can last long periods of time without any form of refrigeration. For people that live in disaster prone areas for example. If I had good reason to believe a major disaster was going to hit, what foods would some of you suggest storing up if any, that would last months if not years, and not have any special upkeep requirements.
Whole grains are your best bet. I keep a couple of sealed 5 gallon buckets of wheat. Rice will work also. They find grains at archaeological sites that are thousands of years old. Properly stored they will be ok for your grandchildren. And if you don't eat it, you can always plant it or use it to attract deer.
Canned goods are only good for about 18 months.
Salt cured meat and fish can last for extended periods (2 to 3 years).
Dehydrated fruit is good for about 18 months.
I'm not a fan of beans, but they will store for up to 5 years.
based on price, taste and how long they last what is the best survival food brands. im looking to stock up on a years supply of food just in case. feel fee to give me any additional details and information please. thanks in advance.
Deciding on survival foods, you do not just have to look at the price, taste and how long they will last, you also have to look at the amount of fuel it will take to reconstitute them. If you are in a survival situation, fuel will be at a premium. Do not focus just on Mountain House dehydrated foods or MREs. Just ordinary canned foods would do well and would also be a great deal cheaper. Canned stews, chilis, cans of tuna and corned beef, Milkman packages and comparable foods would be more practical as they carry calories and nutrition per ounce rather than buying light soups and broths. If you do stock up on cans, do not forget to also stock several can openers. Also, it would be good to include vitamin-mineral tabs and plenty of bottles of water. As for taste, I would not concern myself with that. In a survival situation, you would be concerned with more important issues.
For me, when I backpack, I like the Alpine Air dehydrated products rather than the Mountain House brand because they have considerably less salt and taste fine, but I usually bring in a lot of regular groceries as they taste better and are much cheaper. You can do lots with a box of macaroni and cheese or seasoned rice mix, but that is just me.

Starting Emergency Food Storage « From Classics to the New Age
Many people know how important it is to have food storage at their homes. A lot of American families start home food storage programs and store emergency foods. Even though there is a lot of information on food storage, many people keep asking what foods are the best to store. The truth is that there are many options and everyone should choose his or her own way. But this article will give you some useful ideas on survival foods. We will try to focus on food products that could be easily found in most grocery stores all over the country. Dried pasta is a good choice. It could be purchased anywhere, it is cheap and it has a long shelf life. If you store your dried pasta properly, it could last for more than twelve months. This type of food is also very easy to cook. You do not need anything except for boiling water. And you are able to get a filling and delicious meal. Canned foods are very popular among those who want to store food for emergency purposes. Canned fruit, vegetables and meats could be used at any time when the fresh ones are not available. When buying canned food, pay attention to the condition of cans. They should have no dents. Such food products could last a lot longer than a year.
