Survival Gear Guide

I want a comprehensive, straighforward, consice survival guide, that covers as much as possible of fire starting, camp building, identifying/harbouring edible plants, and of course safety and protection from elements and creatures. I'm not too concerned with traps and hunting as that is more complex than I would like to get into now.
Specifically I am speaking of Canadian climate survival (Ontario) so if there is a book geared towards that, I would appreciate knowing.

I have my trusty old and severely worn Boy Scout manual, but it's woefully behind the times. I am headed to hike around the base of Mt. Hood in September and I want to be able to prepare for the journey by acquiring all the right camping gear I possibly can. I need a resource guide for that, however, and I don't know that one really exists. Example: If I wanted to learn all about boating, I'd buy "Chapman's Guide to Piloting." Is there something like that out there that covers camping equipment, gear, technology, physical preparedness, wilderness survival techniques, etc. Thanks!

How about going to a bookstore or your local BSA and getting a current issue of the Boy Scout's Manual?

out of three men, who would stand the greatest chance at survival if stranded on a deserted island?? the first being a nature guide with a backpack full of survival gear, the second is a man of the wild, he was born and raised in nature and has never recieved anything man-made, as far as he knows, he is the only man alive, that is how deep in nature he is, or the last but most certainly not least, with only a can of hairspray and a gleamingly attractive chest and ripped up pirate's shirt on, and some pirate boots, and a bandana on, we have patrick swayze, who would you place your money on?? i am going with the swayzemaster!! all the way, how could he not survive, he would surely outlast all these other jokesters, like for sure!!

Okay, so I need to get something for my stepbrother. But I don't really talk to him cause he gets on my nerves. But I do know that he's a big Xbox player and plays World of Warcraft. I checked his room and these are some of the games he has:

You could get him some of the World of Warcraft Novels. Fits for both gaming and for reading. Or maybe Assasin's Creed 2 if he doesn't have it already.
