Hatchet

     We started  our unit on  The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen  this past week.   We are having lots of fun with this book.  There is lots to learn about.   Our main  topics  for this  book  are  the human body,  survival skills  and  North American animals. 

     I found  a great  site  here   for lesson plans  on The Hatchett.  There are links  for  airplanes and how they all work.  There are also  links  for orienteeering  and making your own survival  kits.

     For the human body, each child has drawn and cut out  their own body from paper  and are now in the process of putting the various  organs  and parts on their body.   So far  we have  the heart, lungs,  and bones  on our bodies.   Whenever  a system or body part  comes up in our reading, then we learn about it.  We  also do some reading  of that body system  from the myriad  of  Usborne books that we have.  Surprisingly enough to me,  my kids  are enjoying putting their bodies  together.
