What's a little survival trick you know? (Like finding the North Star or using Steel Wool to start a fire)?

I like surival techniques, things like a 9v Battery and Steel wool, Using your thumb between the big dipper to find the North Star. Do you have another very useful piece of knowledge, that would be invaluable during a survival situation. Perhaps there's a product you really like, like a survival knofe, or a necklace, or a catalog or something you could share with me, as far as preparedness goes.

Also, "jail-house" tricks, like alchohol-cotton-swab- matches, or fiberglass shanks out of cigarette butts, or escaping from prison with Salsa and a DC current, would be valid.

Choosing appropriate fibers for your clothing can be key to survival. The best dressed corpses wear cotton which gets wet and stays wet. Survivors wear wool, silk, and high tech synthetics that (1) keep you warm even when wet, or (2) either don't really get wet or else dry very very quickly.

I always carry a plastic magnifier with me in case I lose or break my glasses. My map and compass won't do me much good if I can't see them! And I always carry a few doses of ipuprufin (like Motrin or Advil) to take right away if I get injured. The less that twisted ankle swells up, the more likely I can walk on it. A warm hat is good to have; it conserves your body heat as much as a sweater or jacket, but takes up a lot less space.

Is there anywhere you can get that necklace missy sometimes wears on Ned's Declassified pearl choker?

It's a white pearl choker with a ribbon tie in the front. The character Missy on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide wears it occasionally on the show. I love that necklace and I'm not sure if it's available anywhere.

secret santa gift idea for an expectant mother?

I have drawn out the expectant mother at work for secret santa, and i am thinking of putting together a bit of a 'first mother's survival kit' (a humorous one, out work has a very light hearted view of secret santa gifts). any suggestions of what i can put in it? so far i have ear plugs, stress ball, necklace made out of pacifiers...

Your gifts are perfect so far! Whatever you do, don't put anything in there about weight control, that could turn a girl into a crying wreck right there in front of you.

How about nose plug, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, baby wipes and slip her a real gift too like a gift card someplace so she doesn't think her being pregnant is a joke, women get really emotional when they are pregnant. Hormones, keep it light and your gift will go over big!!

There was an undecided question by Avatar_Sean about Jehovah's Witnesses giving God too much credit . . .?

We often hear that in the course of our ministry, we as Jehovah’s Witnesses somewhere worldwide or locally-maybe it's us-anyway, they come across a person who had only recently prayed to God for help in finding the truth. Mere coincidences? Well, such experiences occur far too often to be dismissed as mere coincidences. It is really as a result of angelic help in harmony with what is suggested at Revelation 14:7. Did God intervene?

One unbeliever once said: “Jehovah’s Witnesses Protected Me!” While in these last days, many do prove to be “fierce, without love of goodness,” as mentioned at 2 Timothy 3:1, 3, Isaac, a volunteer minister at a branch office of the Watch Tower Society in West Africa, found it true about protection. He relates:

“In January 1992, I was traveling on a deserted stretch of road in a communal taxi with five other passengers. I struck up a conversation with the woman sitting next to me, and she gladly accepted a Bible-based brochure from me.

“Suddenly, at about four o’clock in the afternoon, a new car without license plates cut in front of us, and our car screeched to a halt. Three hefty men, each with a rifle, jumped out of the other car and yanked our doors open. ‘Get out, all of you,’ one of them roared.

“Another man grabbed my book bag. When he saw that it contained only Bible literature, he flung the bag away. ‘What else do you have?’ he asked, pointing his gun at me. I quickly gave him the money in my wallet. ‘Is this all?’ he asked. I told him that I was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and that the Witnesses do not tell lies. He snatched my wallet from me, saw my Watch Tower identification card and then said, ‘Ok, Watchtower. Wait here.’

“Next, he turned to the lady I had conversed with in the taxi. She hastily took off her necklace and gave him the money in her purse. When the highwayman noticed the brochure in her trembling hand, he assumed we were together, and so he motioned her to stay with me.

“Meanwhile, the other armed bandits ferociously attacked our fellow travelers. They beat and robbed the driver and the other man journeying with us. One robber grabbed at the second woman’s necklace. When she resisted, they viciously struck her on the head and chest with rifle butts until she was dead. The third woman they dragged out of the vehicle and shot in the chest. Regrettably, she too died. Only I and the young woman with me were left completely unharmed.

“When we were picked up later by a passing motorist, the terrified woman kept repeating, ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses protected me!’”

Yes, Jehovah God could choose to intervene directly in behalf of any of his servants and others. And if anyone believes that he has escaped harm by divine intervention, he should not be criticized. But when Jehovah chooses not to intervene, it should never be taken as a sign of his displeasure either.

Consider the cases of James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Chosen as apostles, they, along with Peter, were among Christ’s closest friends. But James was martyred in the year 44 C.E., while his brother John lived to the end of the first century. Both were obviously doing God’s will. Why was James allowed to die, while John lived?

Almighty God certainly had the ability to save James’ life. Indeed, shortly after James’ martyrdom, we read in Acts 12:1-11 that Peter was rescued from death by Jehovah’s angel. But why-why hadn’t the angel delivered James?

Divine protection is given, we must understand, not simply to enable individuals to live longer but to protect something far more important, the outworking of God’s purpose. For example, the survival of the Christian congregation as a whole is guaranteed because it is closely linked with the fulfilling of that purpose. However, Christ plainly told his disciples that they as individuals could face death because of their faith. Look at Matthew 24:9, 13. After stating this, Jesus stressed, not miraculous deliverance, but ‘endurance to the end.’ The fact that some individuals were protected, while others were not, does not indicate that God is partial. God simply used the person who was in the best position to accomplish his purpose, which ultimately will benefit all mankind.

Since untimely death in God’s service is a real possibility, Christians should have the same balanced attitude as the three faithful Hebrews who were sentenced to death for worshiping God. They told the king of Babylon: “If it is to be, our God whom we are serving is able to rescue us. [but notice he said "if" God wants to rescue us as it were and see below "if not"] Out of the burning fiery furnace and out of your hand, O king, he will rescue us. But if not, let it become known to you, O king, that your gods are not the ones we are serving, and the image of gold that you have set up we will not worship.” So this account at Daniel 3:17, 18 indicates that he may protect some but not others from death.

Jehovah preserved the lives of Peter and John because of th

Prologue
Last Breath

The woman ran as fast as her legs could carry her through the tangled green forest. The rain falling fiercely from the sky, made her desperate attempt to escape even more impossible. The pale woman knew they would find her, she could sense that they were near; but if she were to die this night, she'd die trying.
Her long blonde hair was almost as white as her skin as it clung soaked to her slender figure. She never looked back as she moved quickly under branches and around mossy trees. She didn't know where she was headed; "anywhere but there", she thought as her bare feet continued to sink into the soft muddy terrain.
The young woman wasn't afraid to die, for tonight she would be dying to protect the light; her light. It would be an honor, but she would give anything for a second chance. A chance to make things right.
Her hope of survival came crashing down when a cloaked figure descended from the night's shadows. The woman let out a yelp as it took her by the wrists and threw her into the forest floor. She stumbled to get back up, but as soon as she turned to run another cloaked figure pushed her hard back onto the ground. This time her head clashed into a sharp object and she let out a quiet groan.
Sitting up, she cradled her bleeding head in her hands. This was it, she thought. This was the end. She looked up to a third cloaked figure,
"Give fourth your gift or you shall surely die." It demanded.
"I rather welcome death upon me than share anything with your filth" She said, her blue eyes showing every grain of confidence she could manage.
He grabbed her by the neck and slammed her into a tree.
"SHARE IT OR YOU DIE!" He growled, tightening his dirty hand around her fragile throat.
"Never." she choked spitting in his face.
"You're a disgrace." He snarled as a sharp pain pierced her stomach.
The cloaked man stepped away and she fell onto her knees grasping the dagger he had plunged into her. Trying to grasp the life she was about to lose. The pain spread through her entire body as she began to choke on her own blood. He then struck her in the face and she felt her head hit the wet forest floor once again. The cloaked figures walked away laughing, leaving her to die.
She wasn't surprised at the outcome of this night, she was expecting it. As her focus began to dim and her mind began to numb, pride and honor swam threw every vein in her body. Her hand tightened around the surrounding earth as she struggled to bring oxygen to her searing lungs. She lifted a bloody hand up to her chest, searching until she found it tucked under her white gown. The necklace was ancient, passed down through her entire family. It was a black jeweled symbol; a symbol that meant so much to the life she was born into. A half crescent moon and a sun wound together by thorned vines. She clenched it tight in her fist and pulled it from her neck, she had to rid of it before the wrong person stumbled across her body. She clawed at the earth with her weak fingers and shoved the necklace into the ground. She hoped that it would be enough.
The thunder roared; echoing throughout the dark forest, the last place the woman would ever see. Big and bright, the full moon casted it's light upon the limp body of a beautiful young woman choking on her last breath. As the glow of life began to leave her eyes, far across the forest seventeen year old Elaina Calient was oblivious to the world she would soon discover.

Yeah it's still pretty rough but when I'm done it will go through an editor anyway. But the more perfected it is the more likely It will get published.
So thanks
Whos Andrew Keen?

I'm actually VERY intrigued. This is splendid. Much better than the crap I normally see on this website. Normally with writers on this site, all they write about is, "Girl moves to sleepy new town, is really sad, get's picked on a lot, and then meets this boy who is every good quality in the world imaginable with no character flaws, and then they get to together and there's no real struggle or plot."

No, but this, this is like, an entirely new concept. Other than a few very minor grammar mistakes, I cannot fathom any mistakes. Good work.

    Craft ideas for children

Young Children: Try a process based art activity. This type of art activity encourages the child to explore the process, and does not necessarily result in a finished looking product. Examples include finger painting, free painting (experimenting with color, line, and shape), clay play, or collage. Elementary School Aged Child: A slightly older child may enjoy a more challenging art or craft activity. Allow the child to choose an activity that follows along with his or her interests. Try painting a portrait, taking photographs, beading a necklace, or decorating a diorama. Adolescents: Teens may display an adult skill level in terms of...
