thanks
ok like i said, i need something, cheap once i get a job ill be getting a real hunting knife, so no put downs, they hurt my feelings :'(

Those all look like pretty decent knives for the price. As you already know, you get what you pay for. I have to admit, I own a few cheapies myself. Harbour Freight Tools sells them around here for about $8.

One of the best survifal knives I ever saw, years before the Rambo movies came-out, was the Marine Corps 7 inch fighting knife by KaBar. (Get the KaBar and not the Camillus. The KaBar is heavier.)

Look around locally and see if any sport shops sell the same things to save on shipping costs. Like I said, my local Harbour Freight store sells them and they are ok for the $8.

Hamster Health?

My hamster has an "everted" cheek pouch. Her cheek pouch came out of her mouth and turned inside-out. She's at the vet, but they didn't tell me what her chances of survival are. Does anyone know if she would recover or not? I got a good answer earlier, but realized I should not have chosen a "best answer" because now others cannot answer me. I wanted a wider range of answers. Thank you.
Thanks Hammiemom! How long was it between the time you noticed the pouch to the time you took him to the vet? How long was he at the vet, and were there any special care instructions they gave you?
Called the vet this morning and they said the stiched her up yesterday, but it came back out as of this morning. They said they'd call me back with some recommendations as to what the next step should be. I'm so sad, but I suppose there is nothing I can do if she cannot be fixed. I am preparing myself for the worst. I will most likely get another hamster if she passes, and hope for the best then. I think I just need to move on. I know it sounds silly, but I cry every time I see her empty cage. I'm sure a new hammy will cheer me up if my Lily passes on. Thank you all for your responses, I really appreciate it.
Lily passed away this morning. They performed surgery to amputate the cheek pouch, but she didn't come out f it, so they tried CPR, but it did not revive her. I'm so very appreciative of everything Petsmart did for her, they were really wonderful. I'm going to get a new hamster in the morning, and I will never forget my Lily. Thank you all for the responses.

Mine had the same thing happen. They, the vet, put it back into her mouth and put a small stitch to keep it there. She was fine and lived a good long life after.

Update: A couple of hours between the time I noticed it and the time we got her to the vet. She didn't stay at the vet, she came with me and left with me. No special instructions except to keep an eye on her. She was back to her old self in a day or so.

Is this `Evolution with Purpose`?

The long neck and feet of giraffe, the broad flat hooves of camel and the pouch of Kangaroo are evolved to meet the specific purpose...it looks like evolved with purpose...in the right direction..with desired changes...depending on the needs for survival..
Timo : Two aspects of Evolution...First....`Something` (The genetic material) has been created which is capable of evolving...and Second....`That thing` knows how to evolve in the right direction for survival...
Gribblin...There is always a `cause` for every `effect` and some amount of `energy` is involved for the `effect` to materialise....Newton explained and proved the laws of gravitation, but he did not explain the cause of gravitational force...even now `graviton` and `gravitational waves are eluding the present most sofisticated scientific instruments. Gravitational waves cannot be detected as easily as electromagnetic waves....Similarly The theory of Evolution has explained the `effects of evolution` but has not explained how that `thing` which is capable of evolving came to exist and how the capabilities to evolve in the right direction originated?

There is no "purpose" to evolution - it is an inevitable consequence of having individuals with heritable traits which can give either a selective advantage or disadvantage. That's all.

The reason evolution *appears* to evolve in the "right" direction is because of the nature of natural selection.
Organisms with advantageous traits have more offspring than those with disadvantageous traits. So the next generation will have (slightly) more individuals with the advantageous traits, and less with the disadvantageous ones.

Remember that there is no "correct" or "perfect" survival trait - you only need to see the many, many different survival strategies that exist to realise this. Camels have broad, flat feet - but sidewinder snakes (which also live in the desert) do not.

> "First....`Something` (The genetic material) has been created which is capable of evolving"

"Created" is a dangerously loaded word in science.
"Exists" is a better term (since we have little idea of how these things came into being in the first place).
And anything which can display descent-with-modification is capable of evolution. We can design computer programmes capable of this.

> "Second....`That thing` knows how to evolve in the right direction for survival"

No.
There is no "knows how to evolve".
They just *do* evolve because of heritability and survival-rate differences.
_______________________________________________

Edit:

> "There is always a `cause` for every `effect`"

Yes - the "cause" for evolution is heritability + differential survival.

> "and some amount of `energy` is involved for the `effect` to materialise"

Yes - metabolic energy derived either from other organisms, or from the sun.

> "Newton explained and proved the laws of gravitation, but he did not explain the cause of gravitational force...even now `graviton` and `gravitational waves are eluding the present most sofisticated scientific instruments."

That is because Newton proposed the LAW of gravity, not a THEORY to explain it.
In science, a law is an observation - like "All matter is attracted to all other matter in a manner proportionate to their masses and inversely proportionate to their distance" (the Law of Gravity) or "all populations of organisms change in their properties over time and generations" (the Law of Evolution).
A Theory, OTOH, is the explanation for those observations.

> "The theory of Evolution has explained the `effects of evolution` but has not explained how that `thing` which is capable of evolving came to exist"

Correct. but that is because this question - how life arose - is not part of the field of evolution. This is "Abiogenesis" a different (and much more scientifically controversial) field of science altogether.
Evolution describes how life changes with time - NOT how it began!

> "and how the capabilities to evolve in the right direction originated?"

As have explained, this is an emergent phenomenon which is inevitable given the conditions.
If you have a population of "units" which can replicate, and their "offspring" inherit the traits of the original unit; and if the traits grant a selective advantage or disadvantage to the rate of survival and replication of those "units", then you will INEVITABLY have evolution.

Try a thought-experiment:
Start with a population of 100 coloured beads, 50 red and 50 blue.
These beads can replicate - every generation, each red bead gives rise to 2 new red beads, but every blue bead gives rise to 3 new blue beads.
After 1 generation, you have 40% red, 60% blue.
After 5 generations, you have 12% red, 88% blue.
After 10 generations, you have 2% red, 98% blue.
After only 14 generations, you have pretty much 100% blue.

THAT is evolution!
