Important information before your answer: THIS IS FOR A STORY. I am NOT going to buy a knife and go shank people and then go live in the woods or something crazy like that. I simply need the basic type of knife, some of its characteristics, and maybe a link to a picture. Thank you!
I think the best fixed blade knvies are found at the following HubPage. I really agree with what this site says. Interesting info. The Curahee is a little big. Scratch that, it is very big. The Team Leader is an absolute gem of a knife. I like it a lot. Read this article, it will give you some great background info for your story--by the way, good luck with your story.

hey guys what is a good all in one knife that is good for combat and survival? i.e if you were lost and alone in the middle of the forest but also good for combat and self defense?any responses is much appreciated.even though it is expensive the tb1 tracker knife looks like it is decent and will last a long time..
i dont plan on combat situations lol i just want a knife that i can carry while i go hunting on my uncles 2,000 acres and one that i can conceal and carry when i go walking/jogging at night time for self defense in case a group of people will confront you and start making threats toward you and yes it has happened quite a bit to me even at my local park..and if anyone sais just use your fists seriously do you think and average everyday person is going to take down a group of people or another who has much more experience in fighting?no thanks i will put out a wep and call the cops
Get something fixed-blade from a known maker (Buck, Whitby, etc) with a tang which goes right through the handle. Then get a Leatherman as well, for all the stuff that isn't practical with a large knife.
As for carrying something for self-defence, I'm not sure a knife is such a good idea, especially if you haven't been trained to fight with it. Perhaps a stun-gun, pepper-spray or telescopic baton might be better.

Since age 6 Ihave been studying, practicing and teaching martial arts and self defense. Circumstances prevent me from attending regular regular classes now but I still manage to get a few a hours practice in with a neighbour each week. We are currently working with Gracie combative video series. With the recent controversy regarding combat survival Krav Maga it is unlikely that I will spend much time on that course despit having spent over $300 dollars on it.
I heard those Gracie instructional self-defense videos are pretty good.

I have a KABAR but those aren't exactly legal or practical to carry around. I want an auto or a folding knife that YOU think would be a great self defense last-resort deterrent.
I'm thinking Karambits might give me the most effective survival chances (outside of defusing a situation)
and yes I realize not all Karambit-style knives are foldable. in fact, they usually aren't. I'm simply considering the "Karambit" shape
A knife can be a psychological deterrent by threatening an aggressor, but they are not effective for self-defense combat. Knives have lethal ability, but little to no stopping power. Attackers 97% never feel they've been cut or stabbed, even lethal wounds.
Further, you are incurring serious liability to yourself. I have two cases I studied recently in the courts where people used knives to defend themselves from physically larger attackers. Both inflicted superficial wounds that did not stop the attacker, then a fatal stab wound that ultimately killed the attacker. In both cases, the person defending themselves with the knife is now in jail serving murder or manslaughter sentences.
We instinctively WANT knives to be good for self-defense. After all, people in the old days fought with knives and the the military uses them and teaches knife combat. But that is in acts of war and open combat, not our world, the modern civilian world. Our goal is not to kill our enemies. Our goal is to survive and avoid being injured.
If you need something for self-defense, use a blunt force item like a baton, flashlight or walking stick. Or use higher-quality pepper spray like Def-Tec, Fox, or Sabre. The stopping power is going to be much more effective. And always have a back-up plan.

Very well, Fred, I will give you some details. The character is female, and her name is Shitani, which means "demon". She is emotionally driven, but still sensible. She is both brave and strong, and knows a little tai chi. Sometimes she likes to slink off into the woods for a day or two, and this is where the knife comes in. It was also her grandfather's before he died. Is this enough?
Edit: PERFECT! i know what to do. seeing its here grandfathers it must be an old knife. now whether or not this story involves, any kind of military combat its safe to say the ka-bar and most other military knives are out of question. yes they are good, but wont last long as a hard core survival knife. they are good for self defence but the kabar will break if you abuse it. and seeing it would be here grandfathers it isnt going to be in the best condition. so heres what i recommend. shes a female character who knows tai chi. a very slow and majestic art. so i can guess she well mannered and tactical. i would recommend a bowie knife. thats an all time classic. but if shes a real fighter the kukuri is a very weird but practical choice.
so i figure go for the bowie, but i figure this knife is old and that the ka-bar is more or less a fighting knife more than a survival not that it cant be used as one tough. its very good.
heres what i suggest-
bowie-

keep in mind this is an old knife form her gramps. so its probabely going to be not american and must be found in asia if this knife is say from around 1890-1940
another good survival favorite is the machete and its great in a fight-

keep in mind that the ka-bar would only suit her if she was a mercenary. because it practical in combat, meant for combat and as a bonus works as a survival knife. but survival wasn't its purpose when it was designed for the 2nd world war. also i dont know if you want it to be fashionable but the ka-bar is one ugly sucker.
take a look maybe you like it. (unless your killing people dont take it)-

remember its how she fights and what suits her style.
dont want to be an asshole but like the other guy said- Black KA-BAR Kukri Machete would not work and would fit under the machete category. also these ka-bars were recently new items to the ka-bar family so they wouldn't be old as of right now.
also to nb, the marines dont get issued a ka-bar anymore they get a similar but longer bowie bayonet.
i would imagine this girl to use something like a kukuri or a tanto if she indeed is in asia-

a bowie is a very american knife.

Prepare for Self Defense
Crimes are so commonplace that people should always look out for themselves. Every day, self defense becomes more and more important. If you don’t prepare yourself today, then you may regret it tomorrow. Always be ready for action. There are some tips to get you get set.
First, you should decide how you want to defend yourself. There are many self defense weapons that you can choose from. The most popular weapons are pepper spray, stun guns, and Tasers . Tasers help you protect yourself easily. Local rules can place restrictions on what gun you can own.
If you don’t want to use a weapon, then you should take some self defense courses or some martial arts classes. If there’s no harm then you won’t need to be on guard. A gun or knife can change the situation, making it more dangerous.
