USMC water survival training?

can somebody explain and tell me what to expect on the water survival training on marine boot camp? share your experience please..i will be goin next month and i want to know exactly what to expect..thanks

When I went through I couldn't swim. You spend 1 week at the pool so you have plenty of time to learn.

For swim qual 4 (the minimum) you have to swim across the pool once, jump off the 15 foot board, tred water/float for 15 min and I think that was it, there may be one more swim across the pool at the end.

Don't worry about it, you will learn to swim.

Good luck and Semper Fi!

Survival Training and bush craft.?

I'm looking for a good camping, survival, and bushcraft websites that anyone can recommend. I want sites that show you how to build kits, best tools and gear to take and what guns to use for different tasks like hunting and signaling.

I did a "survival training" search and one of the sites I found was some radical groups website and I don't want to keep stumbling on to crap like that. I hate hate groups (is that a double negative).
I'm in the VA, KY, TN area

lol no, it's not a double negative.

Most of what I've learned has come indirectly from my reading up on knives. A good survival knife is key to bushcraft, camping, and survival. I've learned a lot from http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/index. php - not only about knives, but about how to use them as well. They have a sub-forum devoted to survival tactics: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumd isplay.php?f=692

In the Wilderness & Survival Skills forum, there's information on firesteels, fire-making, knife use, tracking, etc.

Also, many of the Army field manuals are available for free on the internet - including the survival field manual. There's some really good information in it. Here's a link to the survival manual: http://www.equipped.org/fm21-76.htm There's also some good information (though most of it is more product-related) on the general Equipped to Survive Website: http://www.equipped.org/

Lastly, I'd really recommend getting the book by John Lofty Wiseman, "SAS Survival Handbook." It's a very comprehensive look at the many facets of survival in any condition/environment. From knot-tying and snares to basic campcraft and foraging, he's really done a great job on the book. I believe they just came out with a revision of the same book - the one I have has many grammar/spelling errors. The information is very sound too; it's a great book.

Hope this helps.

why do wolderness / survival /camping schools not list what you need to bring up front?

I am an experienced back packer and hiker, and am looking to send my nephew to a camping skills school as a gift, I find it very frustrating when looking into schools or training camps that they don't give an equipment list up front, as not only wpould it help to get ready, but also give a clue as to what the focus of there teachings will be. Any one have a clue as to why they don't list things to bring?

I don't know where you've looked but BOSS - The Boulder Outdoor Survival School offers a general gear list here, and under each link is a little more information: http://www.boss-inc.com/08faq.html#Two17 , but Tom Brown Jr's tracking school says there are gear lists under each class section but I certainly can't find them: http://www.trackerschool.com/faq_equipme nt.asp

I imagine if you called them they could give you a list and I would also suspect the reason they aren't more specific is because to learn survival you'll want as few pieces of gear as humanly possible, and one of the sites said they wanted to dissuade people from purchasing unnecessary and fancy gear for their classes, which is my answer to your question.

Can you go to go to the U.S. army basic training, or boot camp without accually enlisting?

You know like survival skills, if Nuclear WW3 happens anytime.
What about for money? Would it be good to join a militia?

From my 20yrs of Army service I've actually seen this happen only once. A Command General with the grace of his congressman had his son go watch/participate in basic (without enlisting) as a courtesy of the congressman. In your case, unless you have some tremendous power, I can tell you emphatically the answer is absolutely, positively, no way, totally impossible. That is the reason for enlisting. It is a contract, spelling out just what you get and what the government gets from you in return. This protects you in case of injury and or death caused by the training. There are many, many more reasons, to lengthy to answer right now, but those I just mentioned are some of the main ones. The Answer Man---Al Cote

    The RaV Bookstore Survival Guide

As you may have read on our blog, the RaV family goes to a local bookseller each Friday night to shop for our wares.  Sometimes it is Borders or B&N, sometimes it is Half Price Books, and occasionally we might visit an indie bookstore. During these Friday night adventures we have run into some pretty strange folks and we thought we would pass our knowledge of these strange people on to you, so you will know just who to avoid.

    1. The Squatters

The Squatters are most commonly a group of teenagers who have staked out an aisle as their own. Too bad if you would like to look at books in that aisle, it has now been commandeered for cell phone usage, erratic texting, and boisterous giggling. Even if you utter the words, “excuse me” they will not budge their outstretched legs donning UGG boots or the like out of your path. You might as well turn around and head back the way you came.
