in a survival situation could I blend gasoline and used motor oil to run as fuel in my diesel truck?

would you want use new or used oil

I wouldn't use gas it flash point is too high, you better off using vegetable oil, peanut oil, mixed with motor oil, kerosene.

why is the survival of the planet (and yourself) less important than your SUV, truck or worse hummer?

What? Pay attention to something that isn't drastically affacting my life in a way that I can't deny?

Actually, the planet is quite safe from global warming. After all, it's a planet. It's really big, and really tough.

Us humans, on the other hand, are rather fragile. I fear for our survival. This fear increases any time I'm near a television.

What items should be in a hunters survival kit? Serious woodsman or woodswomen only?

I ask only because I keep maintain and use my survival kit on a regular basis. The most dangerous hunts I do are hound hunts where I wait for fresh snow and head for the highest altitude I can drive to then hike in on foot. Also these hunts are done at night. I have spent many nights in the cold looking for my hounds and making my way back to my truck. Anyways I recently looked online for a list of items and could not find anyone who had a good list. The reason I say this is either they have way to much to carry, or not enough to survive, and lastly not one single kit contained toilet paper. Not one! I don't go in the woods with out TP. I call it mountain money. All kidding aside though, what is in your backpack and what activity do you participate in that requires you to have such a kit? Can you carry your bag comfortably over miles of rough country with no roads or trails? I have found that my pack has evolved over the years and varies slightly from season to season. Oregon hunter

Good Question -- as with lots of outdoor stuff, this all becomes personal preference and needs.

I hunt in Virginia (not too far from humans EVER), and in Colorado where you can still get pretty remote. Also, I am a physician and prior military survival instructor, so my kit is probably weighted (literally and figuratively) differently than others might be.

As you often hear, the first tool of survival is your brains -- starting there, everything else is pretty much optional.

In Mine:
Water or way to purify water. I carry iodine tablets
Waterproof matches
Signal mirror
whistle
Toilet paper - in a zip-lock bag
space blanket
a fairly advanced medical kit (this is more for if I come across someone needing help)
several pairs of pocket hand/toe warmers -- the chemical kind that just start to get warm when you take them out of the pack
about 20 feet of 550 army parachute cord

Other things not in kit but they always go with me:
food - snacks and usually a denty moore beef stew with a pop-off lid.
GPS with extra batteries -- don't forget to mark the trailhead before you start of into the backcountry
cell phone (often I am where there is no signal, but sometimes hilltops can get a weak signal)
LED head lamp
Knife - I carry 2. One large (Buckmaster -- the knife I got for survival school in 1986 and it is still a great tool) one small (a Gerber multitool - knife, pliers, saw, etc.).
I almost always carry a firearm of some kind -- even when I'm just hiking
some type of waterproof outer shell
hat

A great reference is FM 21-76. It is the military Survival manual. Not something you can pack when you're on foot, but it's a great reference and kind of fun to read. It has improved a lot since my first copy. I teach my son a few things out of the manual each time we go camping. He thinks we're just doing cool "outdoor" things.

Good first aid kits that are light and complete for the non-medical person are Adventure Medical Kits -- google them -- many variations to fit your needs.

What is the survival rate of a hernia in a cat hit by a car?

My cat, Sophia, was hit by a truck last night. It broke one of her back legs and resulted in a hernia. We weren't able to get her into the vet until this morning, and they said they aren't going to operate until Monday. Has anyone gone thru this before? What are her chances of making it through this? How serious are hernias?

Please prey for my girl, Sophia, she's my baby and I love her so much. Thank you everyone for any help.

I would bet that the impact of the truck hitting Sophia split part of the abdominal wall, letting some of the intestine loop out against the skin. This isn't life threatening in itself, as long as the intestine will slide back in or doesn't twist. If the intestine bulge gets stuck outside it IS a big deal, as the intestine can die and kill the cat, after causing a LOT of pain. The usual repair is simple, but if the intestine is dead things get a lot more complicated. Chances are Sophia won't have any problems with the hernia, and it will be repaired easily. It's the same in humans. She will just have this lump on her belly until it's fixed. However, you need to get her to the vet right away if that lump turns hard and doesn't move back inside, and she starts crying.

What do you think of my ultimate survival plan for Z-Day?

When I hear that zombies are about to attack, I plan on getting together with a bunch of my old army buddies, pack a bunch of food and guns into a big truck and head for the mountains. We can all stay there until the whole ordeal blows over. Sounds good, huh?

uggggh what happens if one of your buddies is biten BEFORE you get to him and you run to the mountians? He doesnt tell you because you would probably leave him. SO he hides the fact that he was biten and soon after you reach your hiding place he turns and attacks your other friends and sets off a whole domino effect that you just ran from.

Orrrrr maybe the zombies are already AT your mountain retreat and when you arrive there is NO safe place, therefore you are left with NO place to go and thus at the mercy of zombies again!

OR your truck could break down. OR you could be hit by another escaping truck and as you lay there in a wrecked truck zombies attack you.

Orrrr, Someone ELSE had the exact same idea and when you reach your getaway, THEY are holding up pretty good and wont let you in. THUS leaving you outside at the mercy of zombies. AGAIN!

And what happens if you DO get to where you are headed and it DOESNT blow over?

  • Homeowner Calls Truck Crash Survival #39;Miracle#39; - Honolulu News ...

It happened at about 8:30 a.m.

The driver said he lost the brakes near the Pali Tunnel as he drove toward Honolulu.

"I'm assuming he had to pull an evasive maneuver to either injure drivers stuck in traffic or making a choice to come across traffic and making a choice of the lesser evil basically," police Sgt. Glenn Viloria said.

After several attempts to get the truck under control, the driver was forced to go through a grass median, crossing the opposite side of the highway and crashing into the garage of a house.

"I was dropping my sister off and all of a sudden all I heard was 'Oh, my God,'" witness Ray Cavaco said.

Cavaco was behind the truck from near...
