Places for outdoor survival vacations?

I am interested in camping alone in the wilderness for a week. If I do it i will be doing it right (taking survival classes, reading up, etc...). I would realy like some information regarding where places are that I can legaly go. Please note that I am not interested in going to some public campground with a running water bathroom 20 yards away. I'm talking real outdoor survival. Also nothing too extreme such as the middle of alaska in december, I dont want to end up like Chris McCandless either.

Try a national park. Rocky Mountain national park in colorado is huge... large enough you could go out and camp without seeing anybody for a week if you wanted but at the same time being close enough and not to mention a place that you check in and they know your their so if you fail to come back when your supposed to they'll send people out looking for you. I live in denver and we always are hearing about people to go their to go for a day hike and a week later some ranger is pulling them out of the mountains because they got lost on a trail system. You don't want to just go off into the wild without anybody knowing where you are going to be though because then if something goes wrong your kind of just S.O.L. The great thing about national parks is that almost every state has them to some degree so you should be able to find something relatively close to you that has what your looking for.

Does anybody know where I can take a survival vacation in the USA?

My friends and I would like to be either dropped off somewhere or parachute in with gear and just live off the land. Is there a business that you know of? I don't need an ear full about how unsafe it is, just the information. Thanks!

many places do stuff like this, most commonly you hire a small charter/float plane and they usually drop you off on an island and pick you up later...alaska has these trips, i 've even heard of them in the adirondacks of new york state..you dont really live off the land though, with a plane you can bring plenty of amenities and you definitely should

What would be a good survival salary today for one on their own?

Nothing fancy-Just an average 200k house,3 year old car,health insur.,retirement plan,vacations.......Would 100 k be enough? After taxes maybe 60k take home.

you call a 200k house not fancy....well , I guess is all depends on where do you live...where I live 100k salary and 60k bring home ..you rich..I live in a small town in IL.

Should you drink your pee in a survival situation?

Bear Grylls did it, but this other survival instructor, Les, said you shouldn't do it. What makes it bad for you?
I'm curious, plus I sometimes vacation in places far from civilization.

If you wish. It's generally considered harmless. See 'urophagia'.

European Vacation Survival Kit?

My cousin is going to spend 2 months in Europe (she's going everywhere) and for her birthday I want to send her a survival kit. I thought of toilet seat covers and hand sanitizer, some kind of translator dictionary that hopefully has a few languages in it (know where I can find one?) and a wallet chain. Any other ideas would be helpful. Thanks!

That's a great thing for you to do. I spent 6 months in Europe a few years back. Here are a few things I would suggest.
1- flip flops for showering in hostels and travel hotels
2- dryer sheets (like Downy) they keep a backpack smelling fresh
3- travel pouch/purse- no wallets, pick pockets are everywhere especially high tourist destinations
3- Nalgene bottle- you would not believe how hard it can be sometimes to get a drink of water without paying $5 for it.
4- currency converter cheat sheet- most countries are on the euro but it helped me out a lot to quickly calculate prices.
5- some extra money to mail things home during her trip. souvineers and momentos add a lot of weight to a bag after a couple cities worth of visits. She'll love you for this, trust me.
Hope she has a great time, its an amazing experience.

The recently announced IMF sale of 191.3 tonnes of their gold reserves, though it caused an immediate sharp knee-jerk reaction in gold futures markets, will have a negligible effect on the long-term price of gold. There will come a time when the prices for real physical gold and real physical silver completely sever the already tenuous umbilical cord they maintain to the suppressed prices of gold and silver established by the agent bullion banks of the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England in futures markets.

For those wishing to dig deeper into the observations, below is the key take home from today's Breakfast with Dave ( full piece here ).

In several of my recent musings, I put forward the idea that economic, political and market trends are likely to continue the pattern of alternating direction from one year to the next. In other words, what worked in 2010 is not likely going to work in 2009 any more than what worked in 2008 did not work in 2009; in a nutshell, we are still on this post-bubble roller-coaster ride. If you go back to the initial bounce off the depressed bottom in the early 1930s, what we had for a decade off the bungee-jump was intense volatility. The same holds true for Japan in the early 1990s, and ever since. Considering the volatile, alternating character of the financial markets over the last three years there should be no need to back away from an overall cautious investment strategy that involves capital preservation and income generation, notwithstanding the sharp but inevitably fleeting market rallies that are typical in a post-bubble credit collapse.
