How far can a survival whistle be heard?

Given normal weather condition and average lung power, how far can a good quality mountain whistle be heard from?

That depends also on the amount and type of vegetation. In heavy forest, I would say a maximum distance of 500 yards or even less. In very open areas, up to 1/4 mile.

why do all the compasses say different directions?

I was just in a Bass Pro shop for a survival whistle and one had a compass on it. I, then, grabbed a few more to test the whistle compass, and, they all gave a different directions when I held them all the same direction. What did I do wrong? What happened, please?

Well, look at where you were. You were inside a building surrounded by metal beams and electrical wiring. Electricity flowing through the wires also cause electromagnetic forces (high school physics).

All of these will affect a compasses' accuracy. It cannot effectively pick up the earth's magnetic fields with all these artificial magnetic forces around it.

Even outside, being near metal poles, etc., will throw a compass off. Out in the woods, any one of them should work just fine (unless your are on a magnetite ore body, then no compass will work right.)

Can you help us with our winter auto survival kit?

My daughter's class is putting a shoebox of stuff together, then will raffle it off. Maybe it will inspire others to do the same, given the recent stranded folks. Hoping the Dad is found soon. Anyway, can you think of any other items that may be included or did we cover it? Thanks!

Instead of a flashlight with batteries, one of those shake-up flashlights would be better since batteries tend to run out faster when it's cold.

Where can i get a "survival" kit?

My friend got this camper survival kit for her b-day. It was basically a water bottle with a flashlight, space blanket, whistle, and other stuff for camping in it. I really want one of these, because they make great gifts, and are just so cute!! does anyone know what they are called or where to buy them? Thank you so much!!!

Check the link below and see if this is what you are looking for. If not then check your local camping supply store. I.E. Bass Pro shops or you also could check ebay and do a search on survival kits.

Could I start a fire with this magnifying lens?

It comes with a little lens. Could the lens be too small to focus light and start a fire?

IF YOU'VE NEVER STARTED A FIRE OR HAVE NO IDEA. Do not give your opinion. Thank you.

You probably could but you would need dry tinder and (probably) no wind. The wind will dissipate heat.

The bigger the magnifying glass, the more sunlight you focus onto a spot. The amount of sunlight that you focus is a function of the square of the radius of the lens (π*r^2.)

If you want to be sure about starting a fire, carry a tinder box along with you. That way you will always know that dry tinder is available (since you supply it yourself.)

BTW: I like that hint about using a dark section of a newspaper!
