What is the best key wilderness survival?

A question was asked in the hunting section asking whether or not you would be able to survive in the wilderness with just your street clothes and a knife. Everybody said yes but I have my doubts about all the people who said yes. So to satisfy my curiosity I've asked this question to see if people really know what is accepted to be the top key to survival situations.
The question is not vague at all. There is one key factor to survival that every expert I've studied under and read about agrees on.

  • Wilderness Survival in Todays World

Today we live in a highly structure world that has traded expedience for simplicity, self-sufficiency and purity. Most Americans jump into their fossil fueled vehicles and drive a great distance to the local grocery store to buy fresh and prepared foods. These foods have been grown using petroleum based pesticides and fertilizers. Additionally, other unnatural preservatives, antibiotics and now genetically engineered organisms have been introduced. We knows very little about living in nature let alone wilderness survival.

The constituents and end products at the grocery and pharmaceutical industries\companies are often shipped great distances in petroleum-fueled cars before reaching the store. This all adds up to excess consumption of energy and terrible environmental damage. Admittedly everyone cannot become a forager, but just as many individuals do their small part by recycling, responsible foraging can also play a vital role in contributing a small part to improving our little planet.
