Whats a good book/training manual/reference guide to wilderness survival?

I have been looking for a good book that has:
1.Fire starting methods
2.Shelter construction
3. Edible plants
4. First aid without equipment.

I guess what I am looking for is a good reference guide that has a veriety of different methods. When you answer this question please include your level of experience in survival and why you like your book. Also if you have it a ISBN number would be great. Thanks. Cody

You may also contact the Government Printing office. If you can get your hands on a copy of the US Air Force Pilot's survival training material or as a second choice the US Navy.

They are probably equally good, I'm just retired from the Air Force and still hold that loyalty.

There is a tremendous amount of information to absorb but if I can do it so can you.

Ref: Winter in Fairbanks, AK... Summer in Gila Bend, AZ. If you can get water at -60 F and at 125 F there won't be many things left that will frighten you very much. You will respect a situation but approach it with a "Can Do" attitude and your mind working.

Giving up and a mental shut down is what kills people.

What exactly is a wilderness guide?

I have been studying survival and primitive skills for 15 years do I qualify? How does one become a wilderness guide. Where and how does one go about establining their own guide business, and or lead organized outings? How does one advertise this stuff without sounding like a new age hippie?

You might start with calling your park service and fish and game for your state. You will be required to prove your skills and before an agency awards your registration. many stes require you to work under a registered guide for x amount of time. You will more than likey have to undergo a complete backround check, felons, sex-offenders ect. are out peroid. You will have to get a biz. liscence and most places require your biz lisc. # and reg. guide # in your adds. If you dont most customers will skip right over you. You will have to carry an insurance policy that fits the type of guiding you do. Good luck with your endeavor.

Wilderness Survival !!?

I need ideas:
Let's say your totally lost.

Your guide told you earlier that if you get lost: stay where you are, stay safe, and wait for someone to find you. It's getting late, and the temperature is dropping. When you dump out the contents of your backpack you see the following:

* A cell phone (with no signal)
* Two large rubber bands
* A scarf/bandana
* An empty plastic bottle
* A spiral-bound notebook
* Two retractable pens
* Two pencils
* A pack of gum
* A comb
* A nail file
* A mirror
* Backpack

Items in the environment include:

* Trees, leaves, sticks & twigs
* Rocks
* A small stream
* Dirt
* Pine needles and pine cones

describe how you would use the contents of your backpack along with clothing or accessories you are wearing and items in your environment (Use no more than 3 items that are not included in the backpack.) to address ONE of the following challenges:

1. Create a shelter
2. Gather food and water
3. Try to get the attention of a rescue party
p.s. It's not for school or homework, so don't tell me to do my own work, i'm curious what others think about it since its common.

I have seen this exact home work question before, your supposed to do your own home work you know.
Mostly a load of junk in that back pack.
I could use the paper from the note book for fire starter, it's wire to make a fishing hook
the bandanna as a prefilter for water in the plastic bottle
A nail file is almost a knife
The mirror is my signal device
Cell phone can be tracked for my position and the battery can start me a fire I would not use it for that as the value as a tracking device is better.
It's easy to build a shelter in the forest, I am sure you will get some more answers for the other odd ball stuff.
