How do I make a mini wilderness survival kit?

How mini?
For a single item: a good fixed blade knife.
Second item: a knife sharpening tool.
Third: method of producing fire. Some prefer waterproof matches or stick matches in a water proof container. I always preferred a "flint and magnesium block" which when used with the knife above will produce more flames even in the wettest conditions.
Water purification tablets.
Salt or bullion cubes.
The other items depend upon the location you travel and your personal abilities. In no particular order:
Safety pins (assorted sizes including Diaper pins)
Kevlar line (SpiderWire or other fishing line) best to have one light weight (5 lb) and one heavy (50 lb or greater)
Several sizes of fish hooks
Gauze bandages (and Band-Aids)
Precision forceps or tweezers
Pain killers (Acetaminophen, Ibuprofen)
Space blanket (aluminized Mylar)
Aluminum foil (also be used to make a signal mirror)
Sewing kit (several size needles and threads)
Clean white cotton handkerchiefs
Some find use for a compass, whistle, duct tape, multifunction tools including "Swiss Army knives" and bulk chocolate blocks.

If you have the room or weight limit high enough include an extra pair of heavy socks, an Ace (elastic) bandage, several feet of leather strip, allergy medication (Sinus relief) and some iodine.

A map of the area entered is always a plus.

Do you have a wilderness survival kit; if so, what's in it?

We carry ours in the truck at all times. You never know when you will need it. It basically an old army gas mask bag with a compass, signal mirror, matches, lighter, small portable stove with a mess kit, plastic tent, bowie knife, flares, ghee, salt tablets, packets of electrolyte mix, hooks, line, sinkers, first aid kit, a weeks supply of medication, credit card and cash, duct tape, whistle, there is more but can't think of it at the time.
nylon cord, power bars, hand cranked flashlight, safety pins, survival blankets, water purification tables, ziplock bags.

Mine is pretty small:

1) Matches in waterproof container and butane wind-proof lighter
2) Compass
3) Flint and steel (plus a zip-lock bag with dryer lint and steel wool)
4) My Gerber multi-knife (or Swiss Army knife - I trade off depending on the outing)
5) Space blanket
6) Shake to charge flashlight
7) 100ft of 550 cord
8) Needle / thread / extra button and 2 band-aids
9) Folded up trash bag (poncho)
10) A 1/2 roll of Toliet Paper in a double zip-lock bag (can't believe no one else has this on their list !!!)

#10 has saved my *ss (pun intended) more than any other item in the kit. It makes you a HERO to anyone in your group that needs it too.

10 items that all fit in a small fanny back, or can be easily stashed in the cargo pockets of my Camelback hydration system (2L).

Wilderness survival quiz! Part 2 is coming soon!

1.C - unless you're in a desert wilderness, there'll always be a means to find water and food, if you're patient. Wild animals are usually more scared of you then you are of them and will generally leave you alone if you stay away from their young and aren't carrying around something like a raw steak (mountain lion) or a granola bar (bears). So, not being able to keep your head, running around wildly without thinking things through, seems like the worst thing a person would have to deal with....
2.A - Learned that from my Mom... the North Star is part of the Little Dipper's handle.
3.B - A coffee can can be water proof in the event of rain or a river crossing. You don't want bandages to get wet or medicine to get diluted/contaminated. You don't want a knife to get water damage either.
4.B - A lone tree could get struck by lightning, taking you with it. Same with lake water... and since water is a GREAT conductor of electricity, all the more reason to stay clear of it. Getting close to the ground is the best way to avoid getting struck.
5.A - Trying to get the blood to flow will only cause your friend to lose what little body heat she has left, since your body will try to conserve core temperature for as long as possible and walking around would just cause the warm blood to go to the outer extremities and cool off. Alcohol could kill her.... wrapping her in a warm blanket seems like the best option of them all.
6.B - Wasn't sure about this one... but I know mistletoe is highly poisonous.... and it has white berries... also, most of the nightshade plants have white flowers, if I'm not mistaken, so white seemed like a good choice.

How'd I do?.... if I flunked, my dad would be very disappointed. ;)

  • WILDERNESS SURVIVAL: My Wilderness Firestarting Kit

How have I started my fire in the wilderness since I was 12? A Magnesium Fire Tool? … Nope, … Swedish FireSteel? … Nope, Rubbing Two Sticks Together? … Nope, A Bow-Drill? … Nope

    I carry a disposable lighter.

Yep, thats my entire fire starting kit.

Sure I know how to make fire from constructing a Bow-Drill, Fire Plough, using a coke can, and even using a rubber filled with water (who the hell carry’s a rubber with them in the mountains anyway?).

But the only way that works 100% of the time with minimal effort (I am a lazy survivalist) is just lighting stuff on fire with my lighter. Sure it doesn’t look as cool as scraping a gigantic wave of sparks from a Swedish FireSteel onto a tinder bundle, but it works.
