whats a good survival/wilderness knife thats not worth to much?

i would like to leave to live of the land and get away from society for a while, to live of the land, soooo..... whats a good quality knife meant for wear and tear?

I would recommend a Rat Cutlery RC-4 in plain edge (any colour), a Leatherman charge tti or al, and a good solid axe, maybe the scandinavian forest axe from gransfors bruks. they don't cost a fortune, about 120 for each of them

The best bushcraft/wilderness survival knife?

Hey everyone, I have searched everywhere and can't seem to find a bushcraft knife that fits my needs. Does anyone know of any good bushcraft knifes that are made with, 1. complete full tang. 2 Stainless steel blade with single bevel (Scandinavian grind). 3 solid handle made out of wood or a high quality rubber type material. 4th a blade length between 4 and 5 in. Thank you very much for any ones help, I just want a reliable survival knife.

Well, it's not a scandi grind (it's a convex grind), but the Fallkniven F1 is often seen as the best bushcraft knife for the money. Actually, other than that, stainless steel isn't that common in bushcraft knives. Most bushcrafters have their knives custom made (not as expensive as you might think), but they almost exclusively use a high carbon tool steel.

You could look for "Puukko" designs and see if you can find any with stainless blades.

Spyderco will be releasing a bushcraft knife later this year, but it's not stainless steel and it comes with a $300 MSRP... many customs of a similar design could be had cheaper than that. The interesting thing though is that they're already planning a 'modern' version of it with VG10 steel and (I think) micarta scales. That should be a very interesting knife; especially if they could halve the MSRP. It would make a very interesting competitor to the F1.

What, in your opinion, is the best steel for wilderness survival knives?

I'm asking because I feel tempted to get a San Mai III Recon Scout Knife.

304 stainless is common and works well. It will hold an edge when properly sharpened.

316 is a better grade but not as common in knife blades. It is also a bit more difficult to sharpen.

Either of those are good choices.

Wilderness Survival Knife?

If u have ever watched THE HUNTED Aaron had a knife it was like a fillet blade on one side and smooth on the other, it looked real cool.
Does any1 know a store in Toledo, Ohio where I can buy one? if you do and the store has a site provide a link to it. thanks

The Tom Brown Tracker, made under licence by Tops is a VERY expensive knife for what it is (about $250). It is an interesting design, but it doesn't do anything you couldn't do just as well with a cheaper, equal quality knife.

My personal suggestion would be a RAT Cutlery RC-4; it'll cost nearer $100, uses the same materials and excellent fit & finish quality, has a "if you break it, we'll replace it" no questions asked lifetime warranty and is a much more versatile blade shape.

  • Buy Cheap

  • What is the perfect survival knife

The more gear you have the easier it is, but also heavier/ harder to hump into the wild. Small knives are light easy to care and likely will be with you, great for dressing rabbits, fish, small game. Horrible for wood gathering, since fire is the second essential do you really want a small lightweight blade to beat/baton on (always a chance of breaking it)?

What about digging a Dakota fire pit or a fire bed (you can chip, dull the blade or even break it)? Another survival expert Doug Ritter says never use your knife to dig with, sharpen a stick and dig. ??Great idea?? doesn’t matter if you chip the stick on a rock (just sharpen another one)but what about all the roots, a stick is not...
