Where can I get some winter survival gear & books on information on how to survive in the wilderness?

Here is a link with many survival books, some great some so-so;
http://www.equipped.org/books.htm

One of my favorite authors is Tom brown;
http://www.amazon.com/Browns-Field-Guide -Wilderness-Survival/dp/0425105725
http://www.trackerschool.com/

I have to admit not all of his books are as informative as some others out there. However his books also cover things others do not and the man is a survival expert that trained US Special Forces and he’s an expert tracker.

There are lots of sites on the net however many of them have incorrect information. And nothing replaces hands on experience. So all techniques and exuipment must be field tested by you before you can depend on it.

Many survival gear gets hyped up and sold with that hype for more than its worth. Some things can be cheaper and even stronger if you shop around camping suppliers, Mil surplus, pawn shops and even the hardware store.
I always check reviews of things before I buy at severail web sites like sleeping bags.
Military surplus has good deal BUT some of that gear is too heavy compared to new high tech gear.
But their folding shovels, machetes, canteens. Mess kits and such are strong and cheap.

I have had a obsession with wilderness survival since I was 7 years old, I am approaching 60 now. During all those decades raising kids and working for a living, I made time for the wilderness. I ended up buying over 20 acres In the Rocky Mountians bordering a large wilderness area. And now, retired, the wife and I live near a huge wilderness area of Alaska. Its not a hobby to me…its my life!! My doctor warned me that in a few years that my wilderness exploring should stop or it will kill me because of my heart. I told her well I would rather die out there than in a damn bed!

I truly wish you the very best! But do be careful. You have so much to learn, so don’t skip corners. Learn about living out there about bear & lion country rules and what can kill you. I have lost many good friends who were expert woodsmen and women who died in the wilderness. All it takes is to loose your footing and you could die, like most do, by a fall.

Need any advice just email me.

what would you take with you (survival gear) on a hiking trip in the Alaskan wilderness during the winter?,?

The same thing I did on my last winter visit to northern Canada: A good hunting knife, a canteen, magnesium firestarter, a small tent with 12X12 tarp for ground cover, wool blanket, and .22 rifle, with plenty of light clothes and socks and an insulated coat and boots.

Need a waterproof backpack for survival in West Oregon weather?

I need a waterproof bag to place my survival gear into, and you guessed it. It needs to be able to survive West Oregon's raining season. I live on the West coast of Oregon, near Rainier and Astoria so that may give you and idea of the conditions I'm talking about. If you don't, it's wet or raining most of the year, rain in Fall and Spring and rain and snow in Winter. I was going to order a Large or Medium ALICE pack to use as my bag (odds are large), the size would fit perfectly for what I need but then I realized just how damn wet it is around here most of the year. I know that ALICE packs are water-resistant but not waterproof, I know they also have waterproof liners to put in your bags but that's only for the main hold, if I go liner then I'll have to get three other waterproof bags, smaller of course for the three other pockets on the front. Should I go with this idea or is there another bag that will fit my needs? Thanks. P.S. This bag I plan to practically l live out of in the woods so it's subject to weather almost 24/7 when I use it.

waterproof? just use a garbage bag or a small tarp, a lot easier, cheaper and more common then finding the right waterproof bag.
you can also get pack covers that go over your bag too, if you get into specifics with backpacks like waterproof and special materials, it can get needlessly expensive.
for lightweight survival camping, I carry a small shoulder bag that fits under my poncho, when sitting, just flip the bag to my side and it's still safe from the elements.

Do you think the economy will recover?

I just was reading a thread from a news article about the gas prices and there were quite a few startling posts.
" I'm doing my part to help the economy recover. Over the past several months, I've dropped over $20k into survival gear, MREs, ammunition, and spices/cheap booze to use as a barter good. If you think gas is high now, just wait until this winter. I've seen home heating oil prices close to $4.75 /gallon in some places. When people can't afford to heat their homes, or eat, what do you think is going to happen? I work with a retired SMSgt who has a master's degree in economics -- he concurs with me -- complete economic collapse isn't far off. I also know several "rich" people who have likewise done the same. Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. And be prepared. "

I personally think that we are in very serious trouble, and so do others that posted on this link..

No I don't believe the economy will recover. You have to lift your head up and rejoice as the end is drawing nigh, trusting in the Lord means Do Not Fear, your deliverance is getting near.I have always been in survival mode and trying to get off medications as well in case of crisis but I don't know that this is physiologically possible. I heat and can cook with a wood burner.I am not afraid as I came from Gods making me and will return to him again also knowing that I can no more take anything out of this world as that that I was born with, someone to love me and think of the agape love HE has for you COME ON NOW/TURN TO HIM NOW AND PUT ALL YOUR BURDENS ON TO HIM AND HE WILL SEE YOU THROUGH.

Do colder climates promote discretionary imagination versus passive imaginations in warmer climates?

...sorry if it can't be understood

...this here geared toward evolutionary psychology theorists.

I think maybe to save one self--living in a cold, limiting climate--from boring out the body from its normal routine accustomed to during a physically engaging warm seasons, the mind attempts (for the sake of adapting) to paint a rational picture of reality (contemporary to having imagined that the majority summer days outrank minority winter systems)...

...and thus the survival of the fittest are those who think clear even in unrecognizable territory.

And the survival advantage to an innovative mind might HOLISTICALLY explain every other evolutionary theory with the Law of Complexity:

"The Law of Complexity / Consciousness is the tendency in matter to complexify upon itself and at the same time to increase in consciousness." - (delegated by a collection of Wiki users)

Contradiction 1: Is my ability to problem-solve necessarily based on my imaginative clarity?

Contradiction 2: Do wintery climes necessarily result in slow-blindness? In harsher winter months, I merely spend more time indoors, and thereby am surrounded by a much more familiar environment, if not more claustrophobic. The swampy climes of the Gulf Coast area provokes exactly the same behavior during the oppressively hot and humid days of summer.

Contradiction 3: Do you buckle under the forces of the Law of Complexity?

  • Where#39;s The Survival Gear?

We wanted to do our “geek” Les Stroud thing this week, but unfortunately last week’s winter storm on the East Coast is still holding up a lot of shipments, including our gear.

It’s not that we’ve forgotten about it, it’s just things are slow getting out to us. As soon as things get started, we’ll be sure to keep everyone updated.

In the meantime, here’s another Les Stroud Survivorman clip to keep you held over.
