Its a GPS beacon in case you get caught up in an avalanche. With those, they know where you are, and they waste less time searching for your location, and more time digging you out.

How do I get my family back on track after my husband's breakdown.?

After being out of work and depleting our savings to live, my husband had a nervous breakdown. He took off into the woods for 2 days (he's a former military man and has winter survival skills) and came close to killing himself. For 2 days I didn't know where he was (he did leave a note but I didn't find it) or why he had left. We had a good relationship, didn't fight other than normal spousal disagreements. I knew money was tight but found out that he'd been hiding the fact that we are totally broke and behind on everything. He had always insisted on handling the majority of the finances. I'd ask how we were doing and he'd keep telling me "ok". It's a LONG story, but he's started counseling and is on anti-depressants. He seems ok, but I feel like I've had the rug pulled out from underneath me. I'm trying to figure out this financial mess, but I need to find out from him what's going on. Yet I'm afraid it'll trigger too much stress. Some things can wait, but our landlord wants his $ tomorrow. That stuff can't wait. Our car was just repossessed so I'm struggling to even find ways to get to work. I'm beginning to feel like I'm on the verge of my own breakdown. We have a 15 yr old daughter, so I'm trying to remain strong and not let her know how bad it is. I just feel like I don't even know where to begin and that I have no one to turn to.
Just wanted to add a few things:
His beakdown was a complete shock to me. I had no indication it was coming.
My husband is a war vet and fought in Iraq, but had no history of mental instability. He has met with someone from the VA. He is the hardest working man I've ever known. He just completed a very short-term temp job w/UPS so he's doing what he can.
He is my 2nd husband and my daughter's step-father. They have a better relationship than she does with her biological dad. She knows about his breakdown and that he was keeping our real financial situation hidden. She understands money's tight.

I like the others ideas, and I dont know what to say about your bills, it seems you need to focus on the practical things first, food, clothes, shelter, then worry about the rest later.......so i am thinking jobs for everyone , whatever you can find, selling unwanted items, talking to landlord....etc
also,,might be helpful to talk to social services ,(get food stamps, ask about SSI, disability, etc for your husband, any emergency services ,etc) and veterans groups, since he sounds like he has PTSD or something from all that........
Here are some free resources for you for the psychological stuff for all of you...... easy to learn and apply ...it is free for the basic method in the manual
There is a whole video on the effectiveness of EFT on PTSD , war memories, or other mental, physical and other pains..... showing its effectiveness and doctors and therapists there, too... it is closing down on the 15th, It is FREE so i have no commercial benefit from saying this to you, I have used it and i know it works.......
Support groups
Start with finding food and rent money....... talk to any veteran groups in your area for help...talkto them......call 211 and ask for food resources and discount rental places, also ask social services this, you may qualify for 'housing'... an income based housing
There are income based housing in many cities/towns....... look them up or start asking, and go apply tomorrow
Janitorial, fast food, nursing homes ,are all ideas where they often need help right away

Can you explain what this might possible mean?

I am sitting here at the entrance way to Wal Mart making a fortune. I awoke this morning and my business skills ejected out of me like a roman candle. While Shopping for butter and Nair last night it dawned on me. Milk and Bread. This town needs more milk and bread. Theres snow in the forecast, plus most everyone loves, or is in love with milk and bread. For some reason, at the first sign of freezing rain or snow, old people around the globe spring to life, ready there check books ,and consume every last drop of cow juice and bread. I dont understand it,but im gonna profit off this lame stab at reversing old man winter.
I arrived at wally world this morning at 4am. I drug five shopping carts at once to the last isle. This is where I hear they keep the ever elusive whole milk. I want to focus on milk first because years of shopping has taught me to never put the bread under the milk.
I repeat, NEVER PUT THE BREAD UNDER THE MILK. This is not common sense, but a survival skill that cant be taught. You either have it or ya dont. Thankfully I ran into a cousin of mine that works at Wal Mart. His name is Danny Joe. Some of you may remember Danny from the Branch Dravidian reenactment. He was the guy mixing the poisoned kool-aid. He also was responsible for bring that Divine green bean casserole. He's very religious. Religious people understand the milk and bread theory. They invented it. This is their bag, not mine. I purchase every last drop of whole cow juice they had, and made my way to the bread. I jammed 100 loaves of bread into my cart, purchased the junk, held some baby's, shook some hands, and began setting up my booth outside Wal Marts entrance. I sold Milk for 10 dollars a gallon, and bread for 5 bucks a pop. Many people were pissed off, but what could they do. Did they wanna starve, or freeze to death from lack of milk and bread. No way Jose. They conformed, and spent there savings like and good christian would do. This is not to say my booth ran like a well oiled machine. A hour ago a elderly lady wrapped her pale tentacles around my throat, cussed me, and pissed her pants. She blamed me for wetting herself, and Im sure I looked guilty. It hurt my sales. I had one woman give me her child. She said "sir, I cant afford these prices, why is it so high." "terrorist" i said " terrorist are converging on our live stock and yeast deposits, Its drove prices sky high, I work for the FBI, They planted me here to make sure the citizens of american get their milk and bread". "Well, all I have is 10 dollars" she said. " you give me the ten dollars and that malnourished kid you got there, and I'll hook you up with 2 gallons of cow juice an a loaf of Sara Lee." How does that sound you penny pinching bitch" "my kid"she said. "yes, your first born will do fine" "look" i said. "I dont have all the time in the world" "without milk and bread all these Christians behind you will die from exposure." "now, you wont be giving me your kid, you'll be giving the little tike to the united states of American." We'll train the little devil to become a fighter pilot or milk and bread salesman like me" " not a bed wetter or a walking digestive system like he'll turn out if you continue with him" "OK, I guess your right" she said " of course I am" And just like that I received my first illegal teeny bopper. She seem to have no real problem giving him up. She seemed relieved and proud her son would be a man of the state. A devotee to the betterment of human kind. Though, in reality, in the morning I plan on sending him to the Hell's Angel corporate office in Santa Barbara California. You can get good money for blond headed children on the black market. It wont be that bad. He'll probably end up in some coastal city in Asia toiling away in some dank factory. A good life experience. He'll thank me one day.
Some people aren't as luck as us. They might go without the essential dose of cow juice and bread. Blankets are not enough when flakes fall from the sky. The wood in the stove is meaningless unless your head first into a glass of whole milk. Bury your face and pray for bread ladies and gentlemen. The fat is in the fire, but what does this mean without milk or bread. It means your days are numbered. It means you should lie, cheat, and steal. Its means death without milk and bread. This could be the last thing you ever read. I beg each and everyone of you to go out and place your order for bread and milk. The very fabric and hemline of your soul depends on it. Go now. Go forth, like the wind my little ponies.--

I think you are doing a thinly veiled piece about the US and its relationship between its government and its people. In particular showing how tractable and non-thinking its people are in the face of authority. The second level is how the mighty wal-mart manipulates prices in different regions, depending on availability in that region, and is getting dangerously close to becoming a monopoly in those areas. As a short story tis has potential. I found it interesting and humourous. Good luck.

Where can I live in the wilderness?

I recently lost everything in the economic collapse of Detroit. I lost my business, my home, my savings, my retirement, all of it.

Now I want to take a year of my life and just get away from society so I can remember what life is really about. I plan on taking one full year and living in the wilderness.

I have previously lived in the wild for a period of several weeks on more than one occasion, but never more than one month. But I'm confident in my survival skills, and I plan on taking precautions to make sure I do not die in the wild.

My question is WHERE? Seems like all the land in the country is either privately owned or public parks in which you are not allowed to live either. Is there NO land left on North America where a person can live in the wilderness legally? I can handle cold weather, but I am not interested in trying to weather an Alaskan winter...I prefer a temperate climate where the temperature does not often go below zero F, and where water is readily available. My goal is to challenge myself, but not to take uneccessary risks.

Does anyone know where there is land in the US or even Canada where this would be possible?

What you are basically talking about is becoming a "squatter". This is not legal, whether or not you get caught is another story. Most BLM and US Forest Service land allows camping in any one spot for up to 14 days, then you must move on. Again, if you get caught.

Just a suggestion to consider, so that you are legal. I would imagine you know very little or nothing at all about acquiring a mining claim. Most states out west (Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado) have plenty of wide open space in the mountains. If you were to establish a mining claim you could live on claim legally and legitimately. You have to know what you are doing when filing for the claim and the laws vary from state to state.

So yes you can legally accomplish this in a number of western states. Here is an example for Nevada. http://minerals.state.nv.us/formspubs_mi ning.htm#MiningClaimForms
