non perishable foods to use for camping i have no stove to cook on so un cooked its for a civil air patrol winter survival training weekend
For winter survival you need some fat. Use nuts. Dried fruit is good for sugar and fiber. I like dehydrated carrots and sun-dried tomatoes. Don't forget the jerky. An aged, dried cheese (parmesan) would be a nice treat, and "worth the weight". I sure hope you have plenty of water that's not frozen.
primitiveskills.com Learn basic winter survival skills during a weekend of snow shelters, making snowshoes, friction fire, and more.
I know camping during the winter, particularly in the snowy north is most definitely a different experience than camping during one of the milder seasons. I've been reading survival guides on the subject, but most of them seem to be refreshers of Boy Scout training. Is there anything I should know about this that isn't blatantly obvious?
If where you are going is fairly easy walking , take snow shoes, a snow shoe repair kit and an 8' tabogon, a ten by ten chunk of tarp and some rope. you can haul a ton of crap with you and it aint that much more work! Place the tarp on the tabogon, pointy end to front and back. put your gear on tabogon and wrap like a package and strap to your sled! I used one for a winter out in the brush once, it was a great way to haul my whole camp!

I want to know what plants do what, how to get the most nutrients out of an animal, things like that. It would help if botanists answered, survival training people answered, anyone who deals with the outdoors.
I know that clovers are rich in Vitamin A, but what other plants are safe to eat, healthy and how can i identify them from other plants?
How to build a shelter, I know how to make water safe to drink, but how would I start a fire easily with nothing but the wood I have around me to boil the water? Is it true that very dry doesn't give off smoke?
How to make a bow or a spear of some sort to hunt?
Now for the winter, I will need fire to stay alive. I can use the snow as water, hunting will become a bit easier because the tracks will be easier to follow. I'd like to know about cloud formations to tell what is coming toward me, how to find how fast, and in what direction the wind is going. I would very much prefer a very long answer with lots of details.
This was kinda long, but not as long as some of my other ones.
Thanks to all who answer helpfully.
The best way to survive in the wildness is to get out of the wildness, But it seems you want to live in the woods, this way you don't need to go to work ,buy food ,pay taxes and ask questions on the computer.
Even if you get an answer with a million words , you should read as many books on how to survive as possible you should even study for a few years ,one book is "Camping and Wilderness Survival" by Paul Tawreel and you should read "Into the Wild" (which is a good movie also)Yes dry wood will be less smoky than damp punky wood. good luck
Hi, i am trying to get some information on the proper procedures for a survival/photography trip.I want to come in the spring and stay for 1 full year thru out the seasons.I plan to live entirely off the land and i plan to make a documentary and take photos of my stay and day to day life.My questions are quiet simple and i want to stay within full limits of the laws.
I would like to construct a permanent shelter for my time there instead of useing a tent.Nothn big just something small for my 1 year time maybe like a trapper cabin or such.Im wanting to know the hunting laws ETC as i would like to fish thru the warm seasons and maybe take 1 or 2 big game animals to store to live on thru the winter.I am not a sport hunter and this would be entirely survival and nothn else.I would also like to know the gun laws of such a trip into the wilderness.I plan to take 1 large game rifle( .270 cal) 1 small game rifle( .22 cal).I would also like to have something for close up protection like a shotgun of sort with the barrel being as short as law allows for close encounters in dangerous situations, bears, wolves, Mt lions ETC.
I am looking for locations to carry out my trip but the information i find is all so cluttered and i cant find my answers.I would like to stay away from privately owned land and national protected parks, unless they meet my needs.Staying withn the legal laws of alaska is my first priority and i do not want to be trespassing.
I have been in survival classes for the past couple of years and i plan to take 1 more survival training course at the begining of the year.
Any information that could be giving would be greatly appreciated.Thank you for your time.
I ALREADY BEEN THRU SURVIVAL CLASSES. man people really dnt read this stuff do they, i can ask how to open a jar of pickles and people will come up with some off the wall crap. i posted the question here to try and find locations to do my trip.i have never been to alaska on a survival trip, if i had i would know the answers to which i am askin.i can survive anywhere, i am askin about laws for LONG TERM PRIMITIVE LIVING..geeeeeezzzz what is wrong with people.they should shut this yahoo answer crap down because nobody ever answers anybody.just a bunch of people answering whatver they run up on trying to rack points i guess.
So heres the DETAILED questions since nobody bothers to read them.. what are the laws on BUILDINg a PERMANENT SHELTER(CABIN) i cant build a permanent shelter in a NATIONAL FOREST,u gotta move every 14 days and that means LIVING IN A TENT.(hence the reason i wanta build a PERMANENT SHELTER)i cant take huntin rifles and shoot animals in a national forest. you cant build fires in national forest. i know this stuff and this is why i am ASKIN FOR PEOPLE THAT KNOW LOCATIONS AND LAWS FOR LAND THAT ISNT PRIVATELY OWNED OR NATIONAL FOREST!!!!!! and thank you for questioning my 4 years of survival training,i didnt know it makes my 4 years worthless and make me not know anything when i ask a simple question about locations.
I hate to tell you but if you have to ask how to do this on Yahoo Answers, you are not ready to "live off the land" on your own. I would go through some short survival courses slowly building up to longer ones that last a month or more. Here is an excellent school to get you started:

Hello,
I am 24 year old male, Canadian citizen. I flunked College, and have been stuck in a myriad of low paying dead-end-jobs.
I have an interest in farming, agriculture, or anything with plants. I like being outdoors, hiking, camping, hitchhiking, mountaineering, beach combing, site seeing. Along with herbalism, natural remedies, and survival training.
I have no idea what to do with myself now that it is winter. I do have a criminal record so I can't exit the country, tons of debt (from school), no degree to speak of. I have on the upside succesfully been treated for drug addiction and am now 8 months sober (one day at a time :))
On the downside I have alienated my entire family, friends, and mostly everyone that ever cared for me. Only one of my siblings speaks to me, and my mom calls me on my birthday. My dad lives in China.
Of course now I know that my problems stem from nobody but myself, I have come to terms with my situation, and even except my depressed state.
I am taking steps, to apply for a pardons, pay off my debts, and gain the trust back with my family. But I find this road will be long and hard, and am looking for some opportunity here in Canada. I am great with people, and try to be trustworthy as I don't want to hurt anyone anymore.
What would you do if you were me? Currently I work as a landscaper but I am looking at my unemployment as winter hits, and have not much money saved.
Hope to hear from you
Thanks
D
The other answers have many good suggestions, esp. global trotter's. But there's one other thing that for me is hugely important and that is a very personal, very private relationship with God; I mean the God of the Bible not some other god.
I have found that working close to the earth with God's creation (growing a garden/crops or working with animals) is soul nurturing, esp when you are also in touch with the Creator. Many of life's knots and kinks begin to unravel as you work.
So my suggestion is to read the Bible, get in touch with God and make Him your closest friend. Your spirit can then relax and you can be sure that God will work with you as you work with Him. Soon you will see that some things are beginning to fall into place in your life.

Winter survival family style by Phyllis McCarthy :: Healthy Alter Ego
One lesson I have to learn over and over is that despite our best attempts at being healthy and living a well balanced lifestyle I’m not in complete control of everything all the time. Having children helped me learn that lesson once more last week. My oldest daughter, who rarely gets sick and when she does recovers quickly, got sick and didn’t bounce back so quickly. It stopped us in our tracks, kind of like the nine inches of snow that’s fallen from the sky in the last 24 hours.
Whether it’s because we don’t make optimal choices 100% of the time to keep the immune system at its best or because we keep going when should slow down sometimes it just happens, our body insists we put on the breaks and take care of ourselves. Not unlike being snowed in, literally!
