What are some winter survival strategies for marsh plants?

What are some winter survival strategies for specific marsh plants such as cattail, rushes, sedges, etc.?

They become dormant or shed leaves just as land plants do. They also produce seeds with fibrous wings that can float.

Wisconsin has some excellent state parks, as well as the Nicolet National Forest.
State parks that are open:

Chequamegon-Nicolet Nat'l Forest: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/

The Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest would be an excellent location.

making a winter weather survival kit?

Ok guys.

I am making a winter weather survival kit today to get prepared for the winter storm season, and i need some items on what i should put in there. Can you guys help me think of some winter survival stuff to put in the kit. I am also making another kit for the road in case we get stuck in the a winter storm this year to.

Please help me

The best things to put in a survival kit are:
# A spare, warm set of clothes for each person including a waterproof
# Medicine essentials (paracetamol etc) and a first aid kit (including things such as cleansing items and a spray that kills bacteria when sprayed onto an open wound- alcohol does the same job)
# Oxytetracycline tablets (diarrhea or infection).
# Tinned foods- and a small cooking pot
# Water purification tablets or drops.
# Fire Starting equipment- Lighter, metal match, waterproof matches.
# Signalling items- Signaling mirror.
# Wrist compass.
# Fish and snare line, Fishhooks.
# Needle and thread.
# Knife.

Where can I get some winter survival gear & books on information on how to survive in the wilderness?

Here is a link with many survival books, some great some so-so;
http://www.equipped.org/books.htm

One of my favorite authors is Tom brown;
http://www.amazon.com/Browns-Field-Guide -Wilderness-Survival/dp/0425105725
http://www.trackerschool.com/

I have to admit not all of his books are as informative as some others out there. However his books also cover things others do not and the man is a survival expert that trained US Special Forces and he’s an expert tracker.

There are lots of sites on the net however many of them have incorrect information. And nothing replaces hands on experience. So all techniques and exuipment must be field tested by you before you can depend on it.

Many survival gear gets hyped up and sold with that hype for more than its worth. Some things can be cheaper and even stronger if you shop around camping suppliers, Mil surplus, pawn shops and even the hardware store.
I always check reviews of things before I buy at severail web sites like sleeping bags.
Military surplus has good deal BUT some of that gear is too heavy compared to new high tech gear.
But their folding shovels, machetes, canteens. Mess kits and such are strong and cheap.

I have had a obsession with wilderness survival since I was 7 years old, I am approaching 60 now. During all those decades raising kids and working for a living, I made time for the wilderness. I ended up buying over 20 acres In the Rocky Mountians bordering a large wilderness area. And now, retired, the wife and I live near a huge wilderness area of Alaska. Its not a hobby to me…its my life!! My doctor warned me that in a few years that my wilderness exploring should stop or it will kill me because of my heart. I told her well I would rather die out there than in a damn bed!

I truly wish you the very best! But do be careful. You have so much to learn, so don’t skip corners. Learn about living out there about bear & lion country rules and what can kill you. I have lost many good friends who were expert woodsmen and women who died in the wilderness. All it takes is to loose your footing and you could die, like most do, by a fall.

Need any advice just email me.

  • Cleveland Bachelor: Winter Survival Milestone

    The trip northward for the eventual summery climes may be long and seemingly endless, but between now and that first day we realized we've overdressed for now nonexistent cold there are other milestones, like the first Spring Training game (March 5th at Cincinatti), St Patrick's Day, and the plethora of ever-stale journalistic observations of the lion/lamb nature of March's alpha and omega.
