Where can I get some winter survival gear & books on information on how to survive in the wilderness?

Here is a link with many survival books, some great some so-so;
http://www.equipped.org/books.htm

One of my favorite authors is Tom brown;
http://www.amazon.com/Browns-Field-Guide -Wilderness-Survival/dp/0425105725
http://www.trackerschool.com/

I have to admit not all of his books are as informative as some others out there. However his books also cover things others do not and the man is a survival expert that trained US Special Forces and he’s an expert tracker.

There are lots of sites on the net however many of them have incorrect information. And nothing replaces hands on experience. So all techniques and exuipment must be field tested by you before you can depend on it.

Many survival gear gets hyped up and sold with that hype for more than its worth. Some things can be cheaper and even stronger if you shop around camping suppliers, Mil surplus, pawn shops and even the hardware store.
I always check reviews of things before I buy at severail web sites like sleeping bags.
Military surplus has good deal BUT some of that gear is too heavy compared to new high tech gear.
But their folding shovels, machetes, canteens. Mess kits and such are strong and cheap.

I have had a obsession with wilderness survival since I was 7 years old, I am approaching 60 now. During all those decades raising kids and working for a living, I made time for the wilderness. I ended up buying over 20 acres In the Rocky Mountians bordering a large wilderness area. And now, retired, the wife and I live near a huge wilderness area of Alaska. Its not a hobby to me…its my life!! My doctor warned me that in a few years that my wilderness exploring should stop or it will kill me because of my heart. I told her well I would rather die out there than in a damn bed!

I truly wish you the very best! But do be careful. You have so much to learn, so don’t skip corners. Learn about living out there about bear & lion country rules and what can kill you. I have lost many good friends who were expert woodsmen and women who died in the wilderness. All it takes is to loose your footing and you could die, like most do, by a fall.

Need any advice just email me.

what would you take with you (survival gear) on a hiking trip in the Alaskan wilderness during the winter?,?

The same thing I did on my last winter visit to northern Canada: A good hunting knife, a canteen, magnesium firestarter, a small tent with 12X12 tarp for ground cover, wool blanket,and .22 rifle, with plenty of light clothes and socks and an insulated coat and boots.

A movie about 2 young boys fighting for survival in the barren wilderness.?

I can only remember they didn't get along at first but they have to learn to survive together in the bitter cold and winter. Another part of the move is one of the boys knows how to hunt and build shelter but the other one is hard headed and doesn't want to listen. One of the boys might have been Native American and the other Caucasian. Also there was a hunting scene where one boy is hunting a deer and asking it to give its life for them and to feel their pain.

The Last of the Mohicans.

Either I'm off or you're description is a little off but that scene with the deer hunting definitely happens and thier is a caucasian and a American Indian.

how to wright an essay on survival in the wilderness?

it about survival in the winter

http://www.surviveoutdoors.com
Start with this site. They have information about survival in all kinds of weather and environments. There are even photos of the types of traumas one might suffer in the wild, including frostbite. And though I don't think it was put to you very nicely by a previous anwser-giver, I do agree that you should try to watch your spelling when you prepare your essay :-) Best of luck!

Is it possible for me to move into the wilderness and live off the land without getting arrested for trespassi?

If I was to sell everything I own and just buy supplies for the winter and survival equipment. Is it legal?

Legal, yes. But much harder than you would imagine. My wife and I used to do 1-2 week trips all year round where we lived off just what we had. It is much harder than it seems when you are reading the Tom Brown books. Spend 3 days in a hut with the rain pouring down and out of dry wood and your clothes are damp and you have no fire and it is 45 degrees... do that as an experiment and the whole idea of being Grizzly Adams loses its appeal quite fast. There are people doing it. But it isn't practical unless you are going to try to at least put up some kind of substantial shelter. A tent ain't going to do it. I do know an old fella that lives down by the beach in NC and he has been there many years. He has a hut of sorts and seems to do okay most of the year.

  • Winter Wilderness Survival | The End Is Here

    More often than not when we need to survive out in the woods we’re already in a bind.  It’s getting dark, we’re injured, cold, scared, tired and there is never enough time.  Bushcraft skills can save your life, but most people who practice them do so under ideal conditions, good dry warm summer weather with plenty of daylight to burn.  Rarely do we test ourselves with realistic scenarios.   Hell, rarely do we test ourselves with any sort of handicap at all.  So a few weeks ago I decided to do something about this.

    I drug my lazy ass out of my armchair commando perch, pried my burning eyes away from the computer screen, got into my beat-up old pickup truck and drove deep into the Northern Idaho Forest.  Then I started hiking with a small daypack full of gear at mid-day and didn’t stop until I had less than one hour of daylight left.  Miles and miles away from my truck, I was committed to spending the night out there, all 15 and 1/2 hours of it!  There was no backing out.  And it was cold…  And I had no tent…  And no sleeping bag…
